For many years I've just used a cheap steel ball pein hammer - with the striking surface highly polished. It's getting to that time of year when I insist that other people buy me tools. I've never used a deadblow for fretting but I am curious has to how effective (or better for fretting) these type of hammers are.

Hi Michael

It works very well. It is an noticeable improvement over the traditional fret hammer that you find at luthier supplies stores. I noticed that bounce is reduced and that I don't have to hit down as hard for the same results.

All in all, I am quite happy with it and would buy it again if I had to.

Pat

I got a 1# deadblow hammer at Lowes. Not in the tool department, but in the laminate flooring installation section. $17.98

I love my deadblow hammer for fretting! I highly recommend trying one. I got mine from http://hammersource.com/ It has interchangeable faces of varying hardness. I find it quite useful for other things as well, but it's a dream for fretting. For that, I use the nylon face.

I like mine. It doesn't bounce and doesn't dent frets.

BTW, the hammer I use, shown in the photo above, has 1 1/4" diameter faces. They have other sizes of the same hammer at hammersource.com, but this one feels like the right size to me.

I too used a steel hammer for years. Switched to a deadblow from HF, won't go back. Todd's looks like a nice upgrade, though.

I use a 16 ounce clawhammer for fretting. I may get myself a deadblow hammer for Christmas.
