I am slowly progressing on completing the rims of 2 guitars, a 12 fret 000 in EIR and a OM wedge body cutaway in bubinga. The 000 will get the vertical side braces today and the wedge has just had the reverse kerf lining glued up last evening so will get radius sanded today. I hope to start on tops and backs for these tomorrow. My time is limited right now as the wife had a knee replaced 9 days ago and can't get around the house very well so I am busy with her needs. This is her second knee in 4 months so we are getting good at the recovery and therapy required.

Wow! Between No.7 falling off the bench and a wife getting a new knee, I don't feel too bad about having to goto Mexico tomorrow for work, even though it means that my latest flamenco will have to wait alittle longer for a finish.

hey guys ive just buffed a small flat top mando and i am just about to grain fill a walnut and coco steel strings.......the mando and the walnut guitar are for sale on ebay and the coco one is a commission........joe

I have the bastardized J-35 that I have been working on for the past 6-7 weeks... My first scratch build except for the neck. Everything came from LMI and the Quilted Honduran Mahogany back/side set is actually the same set from the photo on their website. I have the neck done, but the body needs some more scraping and sanding, rough neck fitting, then on to finishing!!!

Neck

I love the look of oak. I think my next one will be a QS white oak 00 or parlor sized guitar. I played a Martin Arts and Crafts and found the sound to be a little less defined than what I am working for, but that can be countered by the tuning of the top...

So far, I really like Oak...

The back and sides of one is QS "Red" Oak. From the reading I have done (and the wood I have played with...) Red is much less dense and hard than White. I have heard folks compare the sound as "More mahogany like" than White Oak -- which supposedly tends more towards Rosewood/Ebony sounding...

One caution about Oak lumber... while you may think that White oak Lumber is Quercus alba and Red oak lumber is Quercus rubra.... the reality is that there are something like 52 official North American Oaks cut for lumber.... and they sell them all as "Oak" lumber.... White Oak lumber is made up of any Oak wood that is White-ish or Greenish... and Red Oak lumber is made up of any Oak wood that is Brownish or Reddish... and there is much overlap... so you could well end up with "White Oak" lumber that is actually a very light looking Quercus rubra and vice versa.... or you could end up with 1 board from a forest grown Water oak (Which is fairly light and soft)... and 1 board from a Yard grown Live Oak (The hardest and densest of all Oaks)...

It would be as if all Rosewood was categorized into "Brown" and "Black"... and they just lumped all the wood into Black or Brown piles depending on the wood color...

I would suggest taking a look at the mechanical properties of the various species of Oak before you make your choice, then try to buy directly from a miller who will tell you exactly what type of Oak the actual board is....

After 30 years of fine service, my International Violin caliper finally jumped off my bench and broke.
So I got a digital dial off ebay, a scrap of Coco, and started making a new one. Nice thing is it reads inches (guitars) and mm (mandolins).



Also glued up a Coco back for a 6, and a Honduras back for a 12.

Is #12 Sycamore or Lacewood, Dave?

Hi Matthew, It's Lacewood, I picked it up from Bruce Dickey a couple of years ago.
I have a Sycamore set in my stash, it's a lot lighter color. But I don't know what it will look like with a finish.

Well jlneng, Me finished the beer yesterday and so took me attitude down to the bar, ...had high hopes of inviting some of the dancing girls back to do a performance on me bench. But unfortunatly they had a previous engagment doing trick or treating for Hallowe-en. So alls that is left on me bench is a few empty beer cans from yesterdays ceramonial consciousness altering ritual with the effects of low grade cheep beer.

Now arn't you really really glad you asked?

Just got the braces and rosette installed in the engelmann top of my Padauk Drednought. The neck is carved, and I am prepping to slot and glue the fretboard, and attatch the top to the rim. No pictures yet unfortunatly.

Nice caliper gauge, I have just acquired a peice of 5/8 Oak from an old table. I now know what I am going to do with it.

Nice work everyone!
This was a special weekend for me - I strung up my first steel-string this morning.
This one is roughly based on a '47 Gibson L-00, 12-fret, slotted headstock, Enlgemann, Zebrawood (!?!) with ebony trim.
For the body shape I used my Hauser jigs....
It sounds great!
The neck angle is not quite perfect - the saddle is a little lower than optimal.
I should be able to get it dialed in without any drastic rework...will let it settle in for a week or so, then finish the setup.

i have been gluing purfling lines onto the bindings for the sides. w/b/w on the padauk for the bubinga dread and b/w/b on maple for the cherry SJ. fitting bridge plates for both guitar tops and still working on the finishing touches of my side bending machine.

This nice Santa Cruz OM was in a bar fight, literally, and lost. Cracked top and back, muliple cracks all around the rim, a separated back, neck block has two or three cracks, some braces are either lose other split, and a chunk of the side is MIA.





With the back off, the neck must be separated from the parts of neck block it's still attached to. I spent most of the week-end pieceing the parts together, I hope to start reassemby tomorrow.

Joined 3 tops and backs. A bubinga/sitka size O, marbled walnut/sitka OM, and a koa/adi Dred.

I also made a deflection tester so I could start taking data.
