I'm just wondering what you guys think aboout Jonathan Kinkead's method of making a neck.

it seems like a simpler join to get accurate than a scarf and i also like the look of one piece necks, but im not particularly good at this sort of thing.

so yeah, what do you lot think about it when compared to a scarf and a one piece neck?

well, I make them a bunch of different ways ....

True one piece, faux one piece look (scarf headstock, with font and rear headplate to cover lam line and matched heel block), then 3 or 5 piece laminations ..

your choice really.

Like Tony said, it's up to you. Making a clean scarf joint is really no more difficult than many of the of the aspects of building an instrument. As far as chosing a style of neck, First you look around your shop and see if there's anything suitable you like. Then you go to the lumber yard and see if they have anything suitable you like. Or you can simply pull out your credit card, go online to any number of suppliers that carry neck blanks and go wild. I recall seeing one of the sponsors here saying he had a pile of 12/4 Hondo.

Look around at lots of other necks. I bet if you put your mind to it you could do whatever you think looks best.

thing is its quite hard to get one peice necks in the UK, most (all the ones i can find) are all for v or scarf, but i quite like the look of a one piece neck, and i dont like the look of necks that have any figure and a scarf join, it just looks... messy, and being a student, i dont have a credit card and even if i did i wouldn't really be able to afford shipping to the uk till the summer, so i was just wondering if anyone had any experience in this area.....

i really should have learned by now that this whole buisiness is just experiment untill you get it right... lol

For me, building a neck with a scarf joint to be a good bit easier than many other elements of building a guitar (routing the binding channel properly, neck geometry, setup, etc.). I've also heard that a good scarf joint is more robust than a one piece neck. I also like the notion of laminated necks as a way to reduce/eliminate the internal tension of the wood. So... I guess I'm a scarf joint guy.

This ends up being the same joint only a different way to accomplish it. If you use Cumpiano's method to made the scarf joint it will be less work and you'll save a nice chunk of wood.

By the way I do like Kinkead's book for other methods and ideas.
