This is the first one from the new shop. Don't know why the image hosting isn't letting me post larger sizes, but you get the basic idea. The client really wanted her to be full figured..
This needs to be re-photographed.

This is for a six string Ukelele destined for Hawaii and for a uke show coming up.
Her name is Jem, thanks for looking as always!

 Wow... that is stunning, she's beautiful.
I could look at your work all day Craig. How about a close up of the fishies on the bottom?

Stunning, Craig! One of your best.

I just don't know how you get the minor details executed so skillfully. Her right hand, for example.

Thanks guys, I am pretty happy about her.
I love to do all inlay obviously, but creating the mermaids really enjoyable. They are all as different as every woman out there, then of course you get the tail to be creative with as well. NO, no live models for this Dave. I had to make her up, dress her, name her, it's fun.
I used some different techniques on her- her lips are pink rose durenamel, so there is literally no joint line between the mouth and the green sea snail face, and her tail is all rippled awabi grav-lam. Being a uke there is no radius on the fretboard, so I was able to use the grav-lam with little worry about sanding through. The details are both engraved and skrimshaw technique. I spent a lot of time on the torso just shading and stippling, and it worked o.k.

Her eyes are actually little teeny gold pearl pieces, the pupil is engraved, and the hair is about 10 or so separate gold pearl pieces all joined and engraved to flash on and off.

More soon,
Thanks,
Craig

Thanks again for all the support!

Larry- your right, mermaids aren't real.. wow7-eyes wow7-eyes

Or did you mean something else? How dare you suggest one of my girls isn't natural!
pfft pfft laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe

The realism is funny as far as mermaids being not real, as far as the upper female part goes, I spent a lot of time studying skrim work to get the shades and crease/body line locations down. Never thought it would come to this, but humans as art ( maybe just beautiful women..) is pretty fun.

More soon- hopefully a tiki god. We'll see.

Craig

Wow Craig, that is a beautiful inlay! That would look good on the redwood kayak I just built! (do you have a free copy you could send me? laughing6-hehe )

I haven't been on here in quite a long time, and I am sure I have missed some beautiful stuff you have done!

By the way, Crabtree is still ecstatic about his!
