Thanksgiving weekend, so family stuff, and preparing the yard for winter.

I don't get to work on guitars on weekends, I have to steal time from work. I got these bridges made this week.

msg for Parser ....

I would highly recommend changing the neck joint on the SG ... they were never built that way originally, but what you want is a full neck width tenon into the body .. make it as far into the body as the neck PU route will be , and deep enough to have it go underneath the route for the PU itself (ie dont route away the tenon)

Put another coat of varnish on the Oakie's body
Kept working on shaping and finish sanding out the Oakie's Oak neck (Yes... an Oak neck... but unless this one turns out absolutely spectacular sounding, I won't be doing another Oak neck... The ring porous nature of Oak makes it far too easy to sand Flat Spots!)

Then, spent quite a bit of time pondering how we are going to fit a 69" refridgerator into the 68" hole in the new house. Luckily... the wife measured the hole wrong and it is actually 71 1/2" (Luckily meaning we don't have to move cabinets 3" higher...) The fridge will go in no problem.

Thanks

John

About a month ago I ordered some Compwood to use in the rims of my banduras. This weekend I build a drying kiln and managed to dry the rims for 5 instruments. I won't be making all 5 at once but because I re-sawed the compwood to <.5" I had to bend it before it dried on its own.

the stuff is pretty interesting - zero springback.

I also went to Tom Thiel's tonewood festival here in NH yesterday. Watching his presentation on how he acquired and processed that mahogany log was very interesting. I also spent too much money. I picked up three AA red spruce tops all big enough for an OM. Two of them have a bit of bearclaw in them. I also got a walnut back & side set and a yellow birch back & side set that has some cool figure in it. I can't wait to use all of it eventually. One of my friends told me I'm addicted to wood so I told her about WAS. I seem to have been afflicted by it. Is there no cure?! idunno

We hosted our first (and hopefully not last) Kinnaird Guitars Reunion and Pickin' Party.
Had a number of customers/friends come in for a Friday night party, one flying all the way from Colorado.
It was a blast!

Built a small cabinet for my planer to sit one. I put casters on it so it would roll instead of my having to drag the stand around that the planer sat on before I build the cabinet.

Worked on getting videos up on Edward's banjola festival website. I do all his website work. You can see all the videos by visiting: http://www.banjolafest.com/videos.html
I had the pleasure of having Al Petteway stay with me that weekend, and what a really nice guy and amazing guitarist. What a great time that was!
Here is one of me and Edward performing:

I attended Tom Thiel's annual Autumn tonewood festival in New Hampshire and had a blast. He gave a presentation of a figured mahogany log that they processed (800+ bf of perfectly quartersawn TIGHT fiddleback beautiful mahogany) and then we went out to the barn and there it was. It was amazing. He also had some redwood salvaged from 150+ year old tressle bridges. It was amazing too! The gang at the Homestead woodworking school had some delicious chili for us to eat and we got to check out a ton of wood. I snagged a really nice and light red spruce top, some bracewood, and a bunch of really nice old BRW. It was great to see everybody too. If any of you don't know about Tom, his website is http://www.northwindtimber.com. He is a very nice and very knowledgeable guy.

My great day made the news that the Red Sox blew it a little easier to bear. I hope the Angels demolish the Yankees.

I'll also be rooting for any team that is playing the Yankees. They swept the Twins in the first round of play offs and I'm frankly sick of seeing them in the World Series.

My weekend was spent doing nothing guitar related. I house sat for some friends who were in the hospital with their unborn baby, so I spent it with 2 dogs and 4 cats. Since I'm currently unemployed I am hoping to have a productive week in the workshop. Will be closing up the box on my first classical and applying the final coats of french polish on my first solo build. (A Martin Style bent-top mandolin) Also, I'm hoping to get the back braced on a J-45 of Australian Blackwood and Sitka Spruce.

LeGeyt, What is the best way to get a price list from Tom Thiel? I didn't see any links on his webpage.

hey Mitch!

I am unemployed too. I love the shop time but it feels a little strange. I think something might be coming through soon, that would be good. The Twins had such an exciting finish before the playoffs! That must have been so fun to watch. I think the best way to contact Tom is by email or phone. When I have purchased from him not face to face I have just emailed what I was looking for and he responded with what he had or could cut for me.

Now who's idea was it to stick a banjo neck on a mandolin body?! Sounds great, and really nice playing, too.

Hey Burton,

It was a great end to the regular season and the last of the games in the Metrodome. It's disappointing that the Twins never make it very far when they make the playoffs because we're always playing teams like the Yankees pfft . Guess there's always football, and we're off to a good start.

It was the guy sitting on the right(Edward Dick). But before him it was August Pollman in the late 1800's. Go to http://www.banjolas.com for more information. Thanks for the kind words!

Hi John,

I'm inclined to agree with you...I worked that model up for someone else & based it on the plans at hand.

Having tested some prototype guitars to destruction in my past (a la the prototype rock star maneuver) I can attest to the strength of the joint you mention. The necks invariable brake along the shank somewhere...and never at the glue joint.

I did some hand-cut marquetry for a change. Made this 4-tone picture based on an old b/w photo of one of Tyra Banks' top models from a few years ago. It measures about 9" x 12". This is just the bare wood veneer - I still have to edge it and then mount it on some kind of substrate and finish it. Look at it from a few feet back for best effect.

Cheers,
Dave F.
