I just been given a old record no7 plane that on first appearance looks fine, but the blade sticks out way too far easy just use the thumb wheel Oh no it has to be an awkward bu**er with the thumb screw at maximum travel the blades still far to far out, now if I adjust the capping iron to suit I get a distance from the end of the capping and the blade is very small less than 1mm. Now I know I could grind the blade back a bit, or file a new hole or possibly shim up the frog, but if there's an easier way I'd like to find it.

hey guys ... dont most plane blades have 3 or 4 grooves/slots that the adjuster sits in .. might be in the wrong one. They are there for when the blade gets sharpened too many times, and needs to be moved back a slot to be able to advance the balde out far enough to cut again.

sounds like the plane iron isn't position correctly on the adjuster.

Tony, you are descibing an adjustment system such as found on many, if not most, Stanley block planes (#60 1/2 etc). A Stanley bench plane, which the Record is modelled after so I assume it is similar, has an adjustment lever that pokes through the slot in the iron and through to a cutout in the the chip breaker, which moves the iron/chip breaker assembly up or down.

What they all said. You just happen to have a plane that is improperly set up. Somebody probably took it apart before it was sold to you, and then re-assembled it incorrectly. Google up some articles on plane adjustments and plane set ups. It's really not too difficult to set up a plane. I expect you'll be just fine. After you do some reading, if you're still having problems, come back with a picture or two. I'm sure several plane wizards will gladly jump in to your rescue. Cheers!

The thing I'm wondering is if the capping iron is mismatched to the plane it's a style I'd not seen before where the curved part is removeable and the top part sits in a little groove.

Nothing wrong with the capping iron, in fact it's a big plus. You've possibly got one of the more desirable types of Record plane. That capping iron is a 2 piece Stayset. In fact i've just paid £20 for the Clifton capping iron equivalent
You need to learn how to set up the plane or take it to someone who can help you.

On closer examination (I needed a magnifying glass) it says Record Stay Set Cap Iron so it probably isn't a mismatch just a unsuccessful modification, and I'll have to google/youtube plane setups, and Todd if I keep the edge of cap iron to edge of blade adjustment down to the dimensions you show with the adjuster almost fully one end I can achieve the measurements you suggest for the mouth opening so I may just clean is up and stick with it and as the blade gets ground back it'll eventually sit fine

I doubt that it's a mismatch, although it's possible certain parts have been swapped out. The 2 piece cap iron is/was a Record feature - it was replicated by Clifton. Sometimes the lever cap will have 'SS' (stayset) above the kidney hole and 'Record' below it.

Google "hand plane tune up" lots of useful info and youtube are available. I did this when I got an old plane and got it working real good.
