So I've finished this guitar (see the post on Steve's Walnut OM) and I don't like the pickguard I put on it so I'd like to replace it. I installed it using the adhesive sheets that StewMac sells. My first inclination is to try naptha and a small, thin, very flexible spatula to slowly work it off the top. The finish is Emtech 6000

Anybody have any recommendations or does this sound like the way to go?

hair dryer or heat gun ..... warm the pickguard up a bit so you can lift one of the edges, then blow heat under the lifting edge and peel it up .. been done a few times at my shop.

Btw .. any residue left on the finish can usually be taken off with some mineral spirits.

speaking of pick guards, Has there ever been any research done on the effect of weather or not a pick guard has any dampining effect on the guitar?? I personally dont like them and have always removed them from my guitars and maybe its just in my head but they always seem to have more sustain and overall tone.

As long as you're adding mass or stiffening your top, the tone is bound to change. Whether it's good or bad, significant or insignificant, that would be a personal judgment. However, I don't like them either

As for the original question, I did that earlier today with naptha and aluminum foil covering it, letting the naptha work its magic.

Thanks Celso, I thought that might work too. I assume you just lay the aluminum foil over the pickguard area to keep the naptha from evaporating too fast?
