Wondering if anyone has tried wrapping the paper on the drum with space left between each wrap?
Haven't tried it but would guess the amount of space would be dictated by one less wrap on the drum and the roll would, of course, need shortened.
Looks like this might add some cooling action for difficult woods.

I have done it due to the paper tearing and needing to be cut short. It worked fine but I didn't notice any improvement.

I have the jet/performax 10/20 and thats what the manual recommends. But it doesn't actually explain why. My thoughts are If you wrap the wrappings tight there can be the possibility of the wrappings bunching against each other and creating a high point which you don't want on a thickness sander. And i also think it would act as a clearance channel for the sawdust. Now maybe there is another reason and i just don't get it...Mike

I think your "clearance channel for sawdust" theory has merit.
It could also be theorized that the channel may act as an "helical air pump" to reduce heat buildup in the workpiece, sandpaper and drum.
That may be an untruth in the real world but would be interesting to hear what folks have to say.

I wrap mine tight.I don't want it to loosen up.The gap could cause it to loosen more often, which would not be good.A tight rap would keep movement to a minimum i would think.
