I have been thinking about a cabinet #6, I want to take alot of wood orr, and sand later, anyone have a #6, or what do you prefer. Anyone know about Auriou rasp sizes if you would! How does Nickleson measure up to the cabinet rasps?

I use the #8 for carving necks. The thing about Auriou rasps is that they cut faster than comparable rasps with a finer finish. I find the #8 is plenty aggressive enough. I absolutely love this rasp.

I really want a 12" #8 for roughing in... and then something shorter and finer for smoothing and final shaping... like a 8" #12 or something in that ballpark.... of course a 12" #12 would be OK for final work too....

I have a Nicholson #50 -- which is close to the 10" #8. I found it cuts properly dried hardwoods faster than their more coarse rasps... and even more so on "Hard" woods like Hard maple and Oak. It has made me want an Auriou really bad.

The smoother cut seems to be much better at not chipping out corners... it cuts rather than yanking out chunks...

Good luck

John

Well...
The Nicholson #50 is pretty decent quality. They run like $50.00... where their normal boring home store rasps run $10.00... They have a semi-irregular machine cut looking pattern.

After owning a couple cheap rasps.... I would skip over the cheap rough cut rasps unless you are only going to be working soft Mahogany. The #50 is doing a good job on an Oak neck I am working on -- I just wish it was several inches longer.

If the money is an issue, consider the #50 Nicholson. If not, get the longer Auriou. Either way, be sure to also get an un-painted plain wood handle (The large plain wood handles don't give you blisters like plastic and varnished handles do..) and a file card to clean them with afterwards.

Good luck

John

Were would you buy it ? I think there are some dealers who have stock but Auriou gone into liquidation few months ago or last year... :(
There are some french manufacturers who keep the production alive but under another company name, I could find it if you want.

By the way, a vidéo of the making of "râpes piquée main"... a strange job...
Go to 3'20" for the wood rasp

For the Nicholsons, Jamestwon Distributors (marine supply) has the #49 for $33 and the #50 for $39. I also like the Gramercy rasps from TFWW; however, I don't like paying Aurious prices for Pakistani-sourced tools.

Pakistani?
Aurious are made in France... or at least they claim to be.

The word I heard is that the unions basically put the old Auriou company out of business and Michael Auriou has opened a new business called the Forge of St. Juery. They are still making rasps, though.

Here is their new site:

Thanks

That's a very good news. I use a Auriou rasp as well for lots of works. Once you've tried a handcut rasp you can't use anything else.
I think mine is a number 11.

I couldn't do that either...
I had a hard enough time paying the $50.00 for a Brazil made Nicholson #50...

I'm going to have to poke around in the old hardware stores around here.... see if I can find an old American made #50.... It is amazing what you can find in those sorts of places squirreled away in a dusty old box... that the owner bought back in 1955....

Thanks

John

Frei, check out StewMac's Dragon Rasps. I have two and love them. The course is very aggressive and the fine cleans things up nicely. They aren't cheap, but not as expensive as Auriou's

That does make sense, one is high profit at the expense of American job loss, and one is still straight Chinese slave labor cost. I would expect China to take over 80% of the custom guitar market in 20 years also, as well as autos, etc....Americans will be good for only Organ donating, ala the recent Algerian/Rabbi scandal.

My side-by-side comparison suggested they came from the same source, but it's a pretty traditional shape and there's likely a couple different makers of hand-cut rasps in China.

Possibly. . . I have 3 of those Chinese rasps (bought from Dick tools) of varying grain size. They are OK . I wouldn't exactly call them 'great' though, adequate might be a better term. Going back some 15 years I bought a finer grain Chinese rasp (different source) and that really was a very good rasp. It looks extremely similar to the 3 that i recently bought from Dick. I couldn't really say if they are by the same manufacturer, performance wise I'd say not but perhaps it's the different grain sizes that's fooling me.
I know a fiddle maker who has a few of the Herdim rasps (also sold by Dick). He is very impressed with them and thinks that they are better than the Chinese. He did warn me in regard to buying the finest Herdim, he seemed to think that it clogged a little too easily.
I've no experience with the Aurio's, going from all the reports they are obviously an extremely well made tool.

Well, Ive got 2 Froggies on the way, I'll try to remember to update on them. I have an African Mahogany neck to carve, not the smoothest of woods, and some basswood stuff.
