I am doing a guitar trimmed in yellow heart for the upcoming healdsburg festival and wanted some yellowheart tuner buttons so I made a set of little oval style buttons. Cool huh. Thanks to Chris Paulick for his recent demo on removing and replacing knobs. That little vice puller works great for pulling the old knobs off without doing and damage to the tuner.

That's a great headstock, John. Did you do the inlay by hand? I like the buttons, too.

John, Did you make a jig to do the oval buttons? Or did you shape them free hand on a disk sander? I have been trying to figure out how to do this myself.

By Hand, Bah!!!!!

Actually Glenn, the stuff I used for those hand rubbed bursts is no longer available and I haven't found anything that works. It was a thick gel stain made by Clearwater, a company that seems to have vanished.

The buttons were done on a cnc. As soon as the guitar is finished, I will post pics. It's Uncle Bob's Zebrawod and bearclaw sitka.

John, that's snazzy. I really like the inlay too. I must have missed Chris' demo, I'll have to check that out.

Did you put any finish on the buttons?

Looks really sharp, John!

But now you're going to have to drill the Purpleheart plugs back out of the tuner holes! But seriously, it's obvious you've come up with a method to plug the holes to minimize headstock runs and prevent buildup ridges on the hole edges during spraying - so can you tell us more about that? What are you using to plug the tuner holes, (purple Play-Doh?), and how did you get the plugs to be mildly recessed?

Hi Dennis, they are cone shaped foam ear plugs. squish'm up and stick'm in. After they swell to their normal size, trim them flush with a razor blade and presto, no more finish in the holes!!!
