Just finished this OM. Body is braz, top is tinted adi (some of Tony's work) binding is bee's wing narra, walnut neck, ebony overlay and fingerboard and a blackwood bridge. I wanted something styled for the local flatpickers in the hills and backwoods of NC, hence the retro look. Thanks for looking.

I've been really happy with the Walnut necks I've done. Years ago, someone called it North America's Rosewood. Have you used Walnut for necks before?

What are the guys back in the hills going to make of that hole in the side... cup holder?

Can you post another picture of the treatment of the side of the neck? That looks like a very interesting treatment of the binding on the fretboard.

What do you find is the impact of walnut on the neck? I've used Mayan walnut on two of my guitars on the neck - found it heavy compared to the mahogany necks I've also made - not clear on sound impact - do you find it requires retuning more often than a mahogany neck? (mahogany is so stable relative to humidity changes - hypothesis that walnut moves more in humidity swings?)

Corky, I will take a picture of that neck tonight and try to get it posted. Check back tomorrow. Essentially I wanted something that shows up pretty well and that neutral color on the neck binding needed a bold statement. So, I put blackwood wedges to mark the position. They show up pretty well. You would be surprised how many folks complain about not being able to see side dots when the house lights are down and the spot lights are on.

Bob I have made as many walnut necks as I have mahogany. I really like the wood. It is very stable and stronger than mahog. In this case I just wanted a wood whose color complemented the rosewood. I have never noticed any stability issues with walnut. I do load up the neck with carbon fiber so that adds to the stability of the ensemble.

Regarding that sound port, I dunno. Folks around here are pretty conservative. They might not like it. It really does make a difference that is quite noticable to the player. I tried it covered and uncovered and really liked it better uncovered.

Pat those sides bent like butter. Or maybe like hot plastic since I have never really bent butter before so that reference is meaningless. At any rate if you get it plenty hot it bends very nicely and very predictably and really holds the set upon cooling. Much easier than mahog.

Waddy my bro is the amazing builder, I just try to keep up as well as I can.

Looks great, bro. Nice, clean lines, and that Braz certainly ain't hard to look at. I think the Narra was a fine choice for the bindings.

In Texas it would be viewed as a spittoon.
Did you finish the insides, by any chance?

I wish I had a closer picture of the rosette Ron. Guess I could take one, but really it is very traditional. A ring of pearl centered between some concentric rings of black/white/black purfling. Nothing very creative there. Like I said, I wanted the retro look.
Bro, I completely finished the insides, and that done before the top was glued to the rim. I do appreciate the clean lines comment. That was one of the goals.

I am a firm believer that walnut is an underappreciated guitar wood. I makes great necks and it is in no way endangered. Guilt free guitars.

I have not read the Clapton guitar, but I do know Wayne Henderson, the builder about whom the book is written. He is in the area, builds great guitars, and I think plays ever better. He has a CD out called "Made and Played" and it is really worth getting.

John, sorry I missed this till now. Another superbly crafted Kinnaird guitar, with some of the nicest BRW I have seen in a long time.

I think it's time that GAL or ASIA, should consider putting you and Steve in a Luthier breeding programme, there is certainly something outstanding in the Kinnaird genome that produces amazing guitar makers!

Dave, I am so unjigged for stuff like that its embarrassing. What I do is cut out the logo with a fret saw and a "very fine" blade from Stew Mac. It usually takes about 3 blades. Then I just rout out the cavity and pop it in. You know I draw it up and make several photocopies of the drawing, glue one to the pearl, one to the peghead and just get to it.
