Great Job Burton
I love the attention to detail, and the arched theme through out the entire guitar. Even the bridge reflects that design element. The headstock has a wonderful retro look to it that is old but original looking. Do you do your own name inlay? If so, how?

Hi John,
I am really happy with the headstock shape. After designing and inlaying a couple I found an old guild headstock that is very similar. Like, very similar. Oh well. As for the pearl I drew it out with a calligraphy pen and got the amazing Craig Sullivan to digitize it for me. My buddy Steve Spodaryk (check out Spodarykguitars.com, amazing little guitars) cuts the pearl for me and does a great job.

Flori,
I am glad the rosette worked out for you! I would love to see it sometime.

That is very artistically produced and is excellent. I am happy that you are getting a lot of positive feedback. It always feels good to hear it and you deserve it.

The bar just went higher I think!

Steve's a great guy, and he makes really cool guitars.

Yeah, to put it mildly! For me, though, it's great to get inspired by work like this. Not only does it shine a light on some possibilities for design that I wouldn't have otherwise thought of, it greatly renews my excitement about guitar building. And the bar-raising just pushes me to challenge myself further and see what more I may be capable of.

This is, for me, the great gift of "show and tell" posts like Burton made here, and why I think it is such a valuable thing for people to do them (whether or not their guitars reflect a level of artistry as outstanding as this one does). Thanks, Burton!

Burton...I am an unabashed slothead affecianado and I really, really like this one. I just missed getting to see it at Joe's but he raved about it for many reasons. Your sense of design and adornment is spectacular. What's next to surpass this one!?

Thanks for sharing!

Well, you don't really need me to add anything to what everyone else has said, but it is a beautiful guitar.

Burton,

Here's that rosette I tried. Thanks for the advice. Maybe with a few more I can come close to your execution.

By the way, I love how elegant the maple looks against the redwood burl on your rosette. I think that's a better strategy than what I tried. What did you use for the inside and outside rings? Koa?

Still can't get over how slick your guitar looks.

Wow, everyone, thanks so much.

James, I got the rosewood at www.berkshireproducts.com. I cleaned them out of all of the pieces that had any straight grain but it is a great place to visit. They get a lot of red spruce 2x4's as leftover from a tonewood dealer who processes on their big saw. A little work to get great braces out of them but excellent for larger pieces like neck blocks and such. If anyone is near there it is a fun place to visit.

JJ, next up is me following in your footsteps! I am working on my website and trying to get a little more business oriented. Congrats on yours, I am getting a sense of how exciting it must be to go live!

Flori, That looks great, good job! Is that a 12 fretter too? And nice going on the armrest, I haven't done one yet. I find it helps to make the maple (or any divider parts) the same size as the other line that rings around. I also like the thinner the better. I can get wood down to .015 consistently on my 10-20 but for some reason too much lower and it gets weird. It is koa around the outside. Your guitar looks very relaxed on that leather chair.

Thanks for the kind words Burton. I'll try to match those widths up next time. It is indeed a 12 fretter - for my wife, in the L-0 style, 14' lower bout, 24.9 scale, with an armrest. It should be one comfortable guitar. I'm still on the search for an easier armrest method... Routing the channel was no problem. But I found fitting the piece (or in my case pieces - I used binding strips) into the armrest channel trickier.
