At my son's graduation from the University of North Carolina in Asheville Doc Watson was given and honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by the University. Now he really is a doctor. So, to show his appreciation he played, and sang a few tunes. See if you can recognize this guy in his academic regalia

At the commincement my brother and I found a bagpipe player (he piped the students in and out) who made his own pipes out of African Blackwood trimmed in silver. Very colorful character so I couldn't resist posting his picture.

This is probably in the wrong forum. If so, my apologies

That's really a fine thing for Doc. Thanks for sharing that, John.

Thanks Steve

Pat, it seemed like Doc was pleased with the event. He evidently originally got the name doc when he first started playing. His first name is Arthel or something similar and the announcer at one of his early gigs asked the crowd what kind of nick name he should have to get around the difficult first name. Since Shirlock Holmes sidekick Watson was a doctor someone suggested "Doc" would work just fine.

Hey - I graduated from UNC-Asheville in 1977. We didn't have Doc at our graduation...

Wrong forum? That's Doc you're talking about. The right place I'd say. That's something you sure will remember.

Cheers,
Danny

Steve, 1977 Unca was a junior college wasn't it? :D
You are right about the memories Danny. Doc is getting on up in years. If you want to see him perform a person should grab any opportunity available.

Thanks for posting this, John. I think it's great that Doc was awarded this degree. To say it's well-deserved is quite an understatement.

Congrats to your son, too!

Yeah, that was the coolest graduation I ever attended.
At the end of the commencement speaker's speech, he burst into song. Said he always wanted to sing for Doc Watson and this was his big chance.

Kudos to John Kidd, standing betwixt my bro and myself.
Takes a real man to wear a skirt with such confidence.

Steve
