Here's a shot or two (or three) of a guitar going to Healdsburg.
It's a sister set to one that JJ used a couple of years ago.
Or was that even earlier, JJ?
This is our CS model. Engelmann spruce top.
Bindings are quilted Bubinga sapwood.
As you can see, we've gone neckless on this one.
If the customer wants a neck, then by golly he can pay extra!










The last two shots are next to another H'burg hopeful.
It's a Cocobolo/Sitka SJ.

Steve, that bubinga baby is a knockout! Great idea to use the figured bubinga sapwood for the bindings! That will be a visual stunner, and, no doubt, will sound fantastic as well.

Well...it's about time you used that set, Steve!

We actually bought the sets in 2004! I finished mine in 2006.

And you executed it beautifully indeed! I love the binding scheme...very effective.

It's sure to turn some heads at Healdsburg and I predict it doesn't make the trip back to Texas.

Sweet! Very clever of you to use the bubinga sapwood for binding. Its perfect! Is that a bloodwood and black purfling line?

Very nice and up to your usual standards.
But, I do believe I see two backs, side by each, neither of which has a center stripe inlay. Are you going over to the eastside? (as opposed to the darkside)

Bro--Not that authentic. It's dyed veneer, black/red/black. Yeah, no back stripe in these. The wood looked like it was saying enough.

That is spectacular stuff and what you have done with it is wonderful. I have seen JJ's, a real stunner, and no doubt that wood was created just for guitars.

If they can't afford the neck then maybe you can turn it into a water feature - then it would really be waterfall bubinga Fabulous guitars . . . well almost.

Steve, I appreciate your comment, and often feel the same.
I've often thought that most trees secretly long to be built into fine guitars. However, this Bubinga did fight me a bit...as if to say, "You're going to have to work at it, mate".

Waddy, if you're not careful, you'll have to put up with a slew of finished pictures.

Dennis, they do thump pretty well...

Mike, yeah, but this plain stuff is soooo much less expensive.

I about to complete a waterfall bubinga guitar as well and agree...this wood fights quite a bit But it's worth the effort.

That's a gorgeous set you have, and as others noted - the sapwood binding looks great.
I always eye the waterfall bubinga sets from uncle bob - the wavey patterns are ust astonishing (and quite different from the pattern on the set that I used).

though I would place the compliment about no centerstripe to the person who joined the backs...definitely some serious attention was paid to how/where the plates were joined, my sincerest compliments...

Beautiful stuff, Steve. You build a fine guitar, my man! I have a set of nice bubinga I need to do something with one of these days. How is it to bend?

Mike, your comment is appreciated about the back join.
Ken, like I mentioned, and Christian seconded, Bubinga can be one of the more difficult woods to bend. Empty your bladder before starting.
This set wanted to facet pretty badly, so there was more than usual scraping/sanding involved after the box was assembled.
Now, I bend on a hot pipe, so if you use 21st century techniques, you might have a better go at it. But Christian said it, "...it's worth the effort".

That is so nice. Bruce Dickey turned me on to Bubinga. Small pores. Low oil. Easy to bend. Beautiful color. Just an amazing wood.
