I'm hoping Al will chime in hear, but I was wondering if the grain and cut of the wood, i.e. quartersawn or or not, has an affect on the internal damping or "Q". I would think that damping is an intrinsic property of the wood, so the cut wouldn't matter. The reason I am asking is that a have some well quartered, straight grain black walnut that really rings. None of the more figured (think bling) Claro or black walnut I have ever had come anywhere near this stuff in terms of tap tone.
I found this stuff at a local hardwood dealer by sorting through their supply of common grade black walnut. The last two boards in the pile were well quartered and wide enough for guitar sets. A great buy! I'm building a guitar with all NY state woods that along with its master grade Adirondack top (actually from the Adirondacks) won't have to take a back seat just because its local.
