A few weeks ago I gave my local friend, Rex, my inlay book, some key websites to explore along with a box full of recon stone and MOP for him to experiment with. He stopped by the shop today and showed me the fruits of his efforts on some truss rod covers that he made up. I thought they were fantastic so I took a pic and wanted to show them here.

Rex is an accomplished guitar player as well as a singer songwriter and all around nice guy in the same mold as Joe White. Actually Joe and Rex played in a few bands together in Northern Indiana over many years and it was through Joe that I met Rex.

I believe Rex may even be an OLF member but has probably been lurking for a short time. Please welcome him to the OLF family and check out his work!

That is a VERY nice start! The work is nice and tight, something to be proud of at any level. I've seen more than one well-regarded luthier who doesn't pull off work that tight!

The only room I can see for improvement in those pics is some CA 'whities'. You can get rid of those a couple ways: pack dust super tight around the inlay (like pushed down with a razor tight) before putting on the CA, use super-thin CA and 'inject' it around the inlay instead of pouring it on (let it pull itself in), or fill the channel with medium CA and then push the inlay into it so the glue squeezes out all around it. Minus the CA spots, it looks like pro level work to me!

The pearl border on the cross is nice. It's like the one I did on the bloodwood cross on Peter's latest...but I wouldn't want to do it by hand!

Thanks JJ for the Intro. I had a great time checking out your shop today and jamming/recording as well!

I appreciate the pointers and encouragement!

I'm new her so here are a few personal facts.
I love guitar--everything about it!
I have been a jeweler for almost thirty years (man I'm old).
I studied art and design in college and taught high school art for eight years.
JJ and Joe White really talked me into this venture. I'm so glad that they did. I'm having a blast. I'm getting tooled up and learning all I can.

It is my pleasure to be a part of this on-line community and I'll check in often.

Peace!
Rex Ellsworth

First time? Great job Rex, I only wish I'd done that well on my first inlay attempt. [:Y:] Oh, and welcome to OLF. :D

Very nice Rex. Welcome to the Forum! If this is just your "getting your in the water" experiments, I can't wait to see what you do when you get warmed up! Keep us informed of your work

Bob...that border is actually brass and looks really stunning in person. My pic really doesn't do these justice.

I'm sticking to my guns...I did some brass-bordered logos for him, too...and those weren't fun either! :)

The thin border of metal/shell is one of my favourite effects; it's a brave man doing it by hand! The jeweller thing explains the mysterious massive talent!
