That's a great shot of real competence. The luthier's relaxed and smooth but he's also pretty fast.

He's talking and joking while closing the box with hide glue. Amazing. Looks like he quickly goes over the whole thing a second time with hot glue to insure against gelling. Good idea! Thanks for the link Tony.

No need to use a brush as they show in the video. For 8 guitars I have applied a bead to the rims from a 2 oz. squeeze bottle in 15 seconds...far less time than he did it with his brush. I clamp the top on a Gobar deck and have everything completed in less than a minute. I use the standard issue 192 gram strength high clarity glue from Milligan & Higgins here in the USA.

But I don't take the time to converse like the dude in the video! Lately, I have been using Fish Glue for the tops and sides and can now hold a conversation for several minutes before having to mate the plates to the rims. I see no difference in the results between HHG and FG. Colin and others have reported similar observations.

Wow! I gotta change my technique. He was working at a very relaxed pace. On my last guitar, I think it took me about 1:30 to 1:45 from start to having all the go bars were in place or, about 30 to 45s to apply the glue and the rest to place the go bars. I was working way faster (and more stressfully) than he was.

On the bandura I'm building right now which has a longer perimeter (I think) than a guitar or at least, a larger area on which to apply glue, in spite of heating with a heat gun etc, I couldn't get the top down before at least part of the glue gelled. I can always tell where it gels because you can see a larger glue joint (It's also very obvious if you pull the top before the glue sets). I used a 2oz squeeze bottle with a needle attached to the top. I ended up giving up on the HHG for this build after two or three tries and went with the TB.

Perhaps a better plan would be to mix brush and squeeze bottle - use a brush on the large pin block area where a lot of glue has to be applied and grab the squeeze bottle for the rim.

I use cam clamps and work around a little at a time with a brush. Here's a pic of the completed job. You can see the blue tape around the top edge of the sides, that is to make clean-up easier, where I daub my brush up under the top and against the sides.
I estimate it takes about 15 minutes to go around. Speed is not critical this way, and I'm comfortable that I'm clamping up with hot glue.

I use maybe 60 gobars but some are for the braces which are attached to the rims first.

That is absolutely all my clamps, (oh, there are 3 stray ones) and you can see by the different colors, they were bought over a 30 year span. There are 12 cheapies in the mix, I wish I had spent the extra and bought the good ones.
