I came up to the house from the shop this afternoon and on my front porch was a package from uncle Bob. I won a drawing and got an extremely nice set of curly claro walnut. Thank you so much Bob, you are the best there is!!! Next year, I think I'll build myself a guitar with it. I've got an awesome piece of California redwood to go with that walnut. Thank you again Bob!!!

Bob is great!! No doubt.

Coincidently, I am building a claro walnut guitar with a redwood top. Have you given any thought to what you would bind your guitar with?

Hi John, I haven't even considered what kind of guitar I will build with it. I'm doing a guitar right now with yellowheart binding and I really like it but it is a zebrawood and sitka and the shades of those work great with the yellowheart. I've been thinking of dyeing some maple maybe green or something and trying that, or maybe just use walnut cut from the same side set.

John, it was your ziricote guitar with curly ash neck and bindings (I think it was yours - or was it Steve's?) that put me onto the idea of matching the neck and bindings, which creates a beautiful visual effect, I think. Now, in the case of your claro/redwood guitar, you could make a claro neck, in which case your neck would already match the body and then you'd use something else for the binding. But if you're using something else for the neck, I'll bet it would look great to match the bindings to that.

In fact I do have a claro neck for this guitar. The binding is going to be tulipwood, which, you probably know, is redish with cream streaks. I think it will look reasonably good and hopefully complement and not clash with the redwood top under finish.

John
I really hope you post pictures of the zebrawood and yellow heart. That sounds like it would look great! I wish I were that adventuresome.

Sounds good, John. I hope you post photos of it when it's done.
