Reverse kerf Spanish Cedar, also. It's the aroma I get every time I strum the guitar!

I love the smell of Spanish Cedar but I find it more brittle than mahogany, I like mahogany!

We've used aspen almost exclusivley. We've recently been using mahogany, and both species are great for kerfing (linings). The aspen has also made great bracing material for our guitars, just for the record.

Aspen/poplar and butternut are both ideas I like. Both grow locally where I live, which is another plus. I'll keep my eyes out for willow, too.

I'm planning to make a batch of linings soon from black walnut. I have a stash of boards I cut from a log I got from some friends nearby (most of which will be used for necks).

Todd,

I tried poplar, but really didn't like the look. Butternut, aka white walnut, is very stable and amazingly light. I'm working on a guitar with a laminated butternut neck (butternut, 1/16" maple, 1/4" black walnut, 1/16" maple, butternut). I think it looks sharp. It's not always easy to find clear butternut. Lakeshore hardwoods in Pulaski, NY has some nice stuff.

Thanks, Randy. I'll look up Lakeshore.

We have a few butternut trees on our property, and one black walnut, but we won't be cutting any of them down for a long time. We eat some of the nuts, though, along with hickory nuts from all the hickory trees. We do have a nice, big, straight black cherry tree I'll be taking down within the next few years. It's south of the house and it's getting so big it's starting to shade our solar panels in the winter. Eat Drink

.

Lining for the builds is Spruce, cedar and birch depending on the other woods being used.

Lining material for seams in bowl backs or a really deep carved backs is ~ silk, linen or hemp

Now lining for my cases is burlap coffee bags....see.

I've always used Spanish Cedar for the great smell that hits you when you open a
case containing a guitar with it inside. I also like its workability and ease of gluing.

I have enough made for my next 1200 to 1500 guitars so i don't anticipate a change
for me in the near future.

Regards,
Kevin Gallagher/Omega Guitars
