Ok so I have started to put on a finish on the body and neck. of my nr 2. Nr 1 is still curing from the French polish. (allthough not all done yet. Seems like its taking me forever to finish these guitars. Its harder the further you go. I have a faux-bound fretboard and I need to buy a fretnipper or something like that. Or if someone has any good advice, feel free to let me know. I am also in the progress of getting some nut files etc. and last but not least a reamer !! Money money money. But no winning on the lottery hmm.

So to the question. lets see what you think. I have put on 3 coats of finish so far . Can you guess what kind ?? :D :D

Lars.

Looking good so far Lars.
I'm going to guess Tru-Oil also.
On the frets, clip the tang as close as you can with the tool you are using to cut the fret wire to length and then use a three corner file to remove the rest. It takes some time but works well.

HAHAHA Thanks Zach !! laughing6-hehe laughing6-hehe . Yes True-oil it is. I really love it. easy to put on and no hazzle. Allthough I only have FP to compare with hahaha. But it look great so far, it does not have the same "Shine" on the top though , hmm. but looks great. Will put on the last coat tonight I think. If anyone has any good pointers or trick for true-oil then let me know. 3 coat s so far, should I put on 4 ? or is 3 enough.

Steve, Great tip ! thanks, will try it right away.

Lars.

Hey Lars,
That looks awesome. What was your finishing schedule? How did you apply the true oil? Did you buff this out?
Again, it looks great.

Lars, hope you didn't leave the speaders in the box! I just got some nice handplanes, so dont complain about the $$ (LN small scraper plane, ECE toothed plane_) Great for taking down wood, without killing your hands too much_)...I saw something on Stewie mac, about a peghead drill bit, so you dont use a reamer, but you have to size it to your tuners....

I DID !!!! duh Allthough, I had made the soundhole a little larger than normal and was able to get em out hahaha. hmm. But as I realized it I was totally Freakt out hahahaha.

Thanks Jamie. No buffing yet. I put down 3 coats. 1st coat - waited over night. 2nd coat then waited about 3 houers until it felt about dry "enough" same for 3rd. Between all coats I used 0000 steel wool with light strokes to take off any wrongs. Now I will let in hang for a few weeks and then see what it feels and looks like and then polish it.
I aplied the oil with cotton rags.

Lars.

Lars,
3 coats of Tru Oil seems quite minimal. I think you would need at least 9.
I put about 12 coats of tru-oil on the B&S of this guitar. One in the morning and one before bed, repeat. I gently levelled every day with 0000 wire wool, buffed out with micro mesh and finished with meguiars polish.
Cheers
Mat

Looks good so far Lars,
I love tru-oil also. Although it marks easily so I'm always very careful with the instrument..but its a good sounding finish.
I used 2 coats of z-poxy as a sealer on the whole instrument (and I wonder in hindsight whether the face needed any sealing at all as the tru-oil doesn't seem to penetrate much)
Anyway what I wanted to say is I put down about 15 coats of oil sanding in-between and looking at it now I really could have put down another 5 or 10.
Beauty of it is its ease of use but very time consuming finish with the waiting time.

Hi, not to hijack this topic, but what solvent do you all use when rubbing out tru-oil with micromesh? And, how long do you let it wait before polishing?

BTW, I tried searching on "tru-oil" and got no matches at all. Don't know if the search feature is working properly.

Thanks,

Joe
