Finally after almost a year of editing the Kent Everett DVD's on How to voice an acoustic guitar and how to set up an acoustic guitar are ready. These dvd's were filmed during kent Everett master classes at Red Rocks Community College last year. The voicing dvd is a 2 set dvd with about 4.5 hours of run time and the set up dvd is about 1.5 hours of run time.
Here are a couple of videos on Youtube about them. The first one is the voicing dvd and the second one is the set up dvd.

As someone who took the class, I can honestly say that it was money very well spent! You will not be disappointed in these DVD's! I haven't seen the DVD yet, but when I do I'll give some feedback. I should have mine this weekend sometime. Kent is a great speaker, and so very knowledgeable! Thanks for all your hard work on this one Robbie!

I watched disc 1 tonight, and loved it! Even though I was in the class, this is the kind of class you need to watch over and over to really have it sink in. So much great information that I really need to hear over and over. Great job! This will be a great learning experience for anyone wanting to up their skills in voicing a guitar. Kent is a great speaker, and really funny. There were several times I just bust out laughing. This makes it so easy to listen to, and enjoy.

I made a post on the Australian Luthiers forum, and wanted to also make that post here. I give my opinion about the differences between Kents Voicing DVD and John Mayes Advanced Voicing DVD:

I think I can speak to the differences between Kent's Voicing DVD and John Mayes DVD. I had already owned John's voicing DVD's when I took this class. After reviewing both DVD's, I can say that these videos are very different, and you really cannot compare. I really think if you want to learn everything you can about voicing, you should really have both John's and Kent's DVD's.

I think of John's DVD as a crash course in Voicing, but Kent's DVD goes into a lot more detail, and it really is like you took the course. There are sound samples in Kent's DVD that shows the sound on a graph with the sound waves. This looks really cool, but I do have to say the sound from Johns DVD of the before and after sounds better. Other than that, you can tell the videographer is a professional who had done some freelancing for National Geographic, so the camera and condensor mic that Kent used really helped it look very professional. The menus are broken down into many sections, so after you watch it from end to end, you can go back to sections to really focus on what he is saying. These DVD's will be the bible of voicing DVD's, and you will continually go back to them to soak in more information as you progress in your Luthiery career. Don't get me wrong, John's DVD's are really good, and got tons of great information with it. Both DVD's just really opened my eyes to tone and voicing.

I hope there is some explainations as to where to look for shaving. Not such a hit and miss approach. Like what are we trying to achieve by scalloping as to tapered. Not just well take this down and see what it changes, ok maybe some more here and maybe some more there. What, where and why is what I'm looking for. Some details and ideas like Somogyi talks about. I can't wait til it arrives.

Chris I would love to see something that gives the what, where, why and how too. I suspect however, that he won't be talking in terms of absolutes. There are so many different aspects to this thing we do. So many different methods and then throw in wood and how it acts under different conditions and boom...you've got something that can't even be explained with math.

I bought it anyway - I am hungry for knowledge and short on people giving me money for my builds....

I understand there's not an absolute but there should be some method of their attack or to the order and it should be explained. It's like trouble shooting. Like I said not a hit and miss technic. If they shave some from a tone arm I want to know why they are shaving there and what they are hoping the results will be. Even if it does't quite get it I want to know why they choose to do that. It's like the other day I was plucking a string and feeling the top and other places and on the wings of the bridge and seeing where I was feeling vibrations and where if I pressed a bit and raised my finger tone changed a bit. I started to notice how the vibration was following the X brace. I thought that was pretty interesting and put that finding away in my mind for future reference.

I hestitate to say anything here as I have accompanied the entire process of the making of this DVD from conception to finished product, so I am biased. I also have studied with Kent and his voicing method for many years. It would be good for those that have purchased Kent's voicing DVD to give some feedback once they have had time to watch it. This will take a while as it is about 4.5 hours long with a bunch of info to absorb.

I'll try to jump in here, I also was in the class and have to say that anytime you have an opportunity to learn from someone as experienced as Kent you should take advantage of it if at all possible.

I haven't made it through the whole thing yet (getting close) but the video is a very well done presentation. Kudos to Robbie, Kent and the production crew.

I think if you looking for very specific information such as this brace needs to be 78.897654 degrees for optimum trebularbass response, you'll be disappointed, although he does give specific tools and guidelines to use while bracing your tops that can be applied to various guitars. Kent also tries to get you to think about the guitar as a whole not just the top.

I haven't seen any other voicing videos so I can't really compare it to those, but this video ought to help solidify you understanding of the guitar and help move you forward.

I'll be more than happy to give a comparison review of the two voicing DVD's (John's and Kent's) when I finish watching. One of the things I appreciate about John's is that he gives four different models to follow for guitars with four different purposes.

Chris, I have a DVD featuring Richard Hoover presenting at a guitar shop. He speaks to the reasoning behind tapered and scalloped. The shop was kindly offering it to anyone interested, but I can't remember the name I let a friend borrow it, or I'd pop it in for the information. Why don't you start a thread on the subject?
