Strung up the 000 yesterday and it sounds real good already. This was a great learning experience, 1st sides bent with heat blanket and bender, 1st side and back set thickness sanded with my new drum sander, 1st Zpoxy grain fill and 1st buffed with a buffing wheel and menzerna polish. It came out quite good, with a better finish than the previous hand polished guitars.

These aren't the greatest photos but give an idea of what the guitar looks like. By the way these were done at the local guitar store's acoustic room, the guitars in the background are not mine.

It is a Martin 45 style, with paua abalone in the center.

Sound Clips of most of my guitars

She sounds real good for a 1 day old guitar, probably the best of what I have built for a starting out sound. I think it is a little tight but has opened up even over its 1st day of life.

The soundboard is Sitka and the bracing is Engleman, a well known Canadian luthier told me he uses engleman on most of his tops and I have on 3 and the 2 I have completed thus far have sounded real good.

As a guy about to start my first build the neck and setting up scare me the most. What would you say you did different than the first? Tryin' to hop on your learning curve if you don't mind.

Congratulations Fred That is really a beautiful instrument! The cocobolo really has some great color and the finish is beautiful. What finish did you use?

The finish is Behlen Instrument lacquer over Zpoxy grain filler, the neck is dovetail, the bindings are Ebony and the BWB purfling is pre made dyed wood from A&M in Cambridge On.

The Coco I bought from a Ebay seller in BC and was not real happy with how it looked, the photos on Ebay were not that good the figure looked better than it realy was and several issues were not apparent. The wood was re sawed to about .300" and quite rough so I didn`t see how good it could look. When I got my Delta drum sander I decided to sand that Coco set for practice as I did not like it as much as my other sets so it was expendable if I screwed up. It looked better after and I figured out that I could CA and sanding dust fill the defects but I still set it a side. When I completed my bending machine I again went for the Coco for the first set to bend as it was still I felt expendable, but after bending the sides I decided it was not so bad looking so used it. As I built I fell in love with the set and now am very glad I used it.

After using the cocobolo the EIR on my wedge guitar looks so boring.

After hearing the sound of this guitar and a friends Coco Dred I am sold, I have a nice set from uncle Bob at RC and it will be used on one of my next 2 guitars. I was a little concerned with the stories of reactions to this wood, and problems working with it but gave it a try anyhow.

I also love the orange and black figure, it jumps out at you.

If you made it through one cocobolo guitar that's good.

I've resawn a bunch at once and dosed myself up pretty good, skin contact.

Before it was over I was wearing a hat, long sleeve jumper, leather boots, just because my head was burning on top where dust settled, no kidding, my arms were burning from resaw dust and the tops of my feet and toes were burning from cocodust working through my Nike's and socks. I also donned my respirator instead of a dust mask as well.

So, with caution cocobolo can be tamed. Vacuum when sawing and sanding is your friend and so is a respirator when bending the stuff, think smoke-born pathogens.

Looks really nice Fred! Sure didn't take you long to get used to that buffer. I am in the process of setting a buffer up too, getting tired of hand finishing.
