This is Carter pedal steel guitar's #2000 showpiece, they asked me to do this for them at NAMM last year at the same time CF Martin asked me to do the one for them. Guess it was a good year for fish inlays!
This took over 300 hours at least. It's my biggest and most involved piece to date. It has cold enameling techniques, (ala Harvey Leach) as well as a few other types of new-ish techniques, and lets not forget how much fun routing maple is. Materials are corians, metals, shell, stone, no woods.

This is going off now to get a nice blue-burst-ish Caribbean look.

The silver frets are a special argentium type silver, which resists tarnishing more than the others.

I will go into details at ASIA for those attending, so be there!

Thanks for posting these Lance,
I appreciate it!

Keep in mind for the top looking down that it's a pedal steel, the upper areas over the fretboards with the butterfly fishes and coral/sponges are framed by a big chrome string trees, so they look odd now, but will be framed after it's completed and set up.

If anyone needs a species list for this dive let me know.. :ugeek:

I agree with Tony. Inlaying into dark wood is difficult enough, but that cleanly into maple, sheeesh....
What a fine example of inlaying, Craig. Beautiful stuff.

Feeling sick .. I hear ya ..., my last real job did that to me .. but I feel much better now !!!!

I did a couple fish into a lighter coco headplate ... tough enough.

I just finished my 1st fretboard inlay and feel almost sick about it. Now that I've seen yours, I feel sick about feeling sick. Really though, it's a masterpiece. Your attention to detail is superb and your level of precision in that maple where there's no place to hide is unbelievable. No one could imagine unless they've tried it. Bravo [clap] [clap]
