Sounds like a stupid question, but I can't use strong solovents to clean the fine sanding dust for handling wood indoors, didn't want to use water damp rag.

Got lots of rubbing alchohol, is this safe to use on wood? Just a damp wipe to clear the dust from sanding.

I can't see why it wouldn't be ok, but I think it's still about 30% water, so you'll probably be raising the grain with it.

You can use naptha or something. Don't use rubbing alcohol, they contain water which will raise the grain and also in my experience, even pure alcohol absorbs water causing thin wood pieces to warp (I tried that on a headplate that's what it did...)

I keep a supply of 190 proof grain alcohol in the shop for shellac. I use it sometimes to wipe dust away before gluing, mostly on spruce. Don't use any kind of alcohol on rosewoods and other color-rich exotic woods. It will make the color run and smear.

How about using a tack cloth after a vacuum?

I've had problem with shellac finishes after using a tack cloth....some of them have silicon. If using a commercial tack cloth and you dont know whats in it I'd reccommend making up your own tack cloth. Ive also had problems with zinc stearate contained in some non clog sandpapers. Ive switched to garnet paper and use a vacumn followed by a wipe with a clean hand before starting finishing.

I never liked tack cloth. They said you need it for finishing but I tried it and they felt like a cheesecloth coated in this stick adhesive gunk that leaves stuff behind sometimes (BAD), so I used a clean damp cloth in the old days before they had microfiber cloth. Now I use microfiber cloth and it gets rid of dusts very well.

Gersons is what I have. I didn't realize there was all that to know about them. I thought they were just cheese cloth with shellac on them. It's like they have been around forever like spit coating.
