Burton, those look great. Especially the second one. Really striking, yet subtle and very elegant at the same time. The end of the fretboard looks great, too.

Do you consider that eight-segment arrangement separated by purfs a unique, signature design of yours? If so, I'll certainly respect that. If not, I just might do something very similar on my next guitar. I love it!

This is a new kind of rosette for me with rosewood pieces glued up with the grain toward center then routed and shell inlaid...

Great! Thanks, Burton. Relatively simple though it may be, that strikes me as one of the most beautiful rosettes I've ever seen. It absolutely screams understated elegance (to put it oxymoronically)! Seriously, I think it's a masterpiece. If I had to die right now, gazing into the window on the universe given to me by that rosette, that would be okay (even better if I were hearing the sweet sounds of the guitar as well).

BTW, I recently came up with an idea for rosettes that will be really different, using a natural material that, to the best of my knowledge, has never been used in a rosette before. I'm not even completely sure if it's going to work, but if it does, I think it's going to be really cool. I ain't gonna tell ya what it is till I successfully make one! But the moral of the story is, think outside the box and allow yourself to be inspired by nature, and you never know what idea might hit you over the head one day.

I tried using something I could get locally. I crushed up some clam shells from the beach and some turquoise from a local rock shop. I used CA for the turquoise and epoxy for the shell and then ran it through the drum sander. Forgot to seal the endgrain on the cedar top and got some staining from the CA.

I'd like to figure out how to put stuff like this into an easy to navigate library that can be referenced by others. I'll work on it.

For now there are 4 of you who have made rosettes that are close to what I'm thinking of doing:

Ken C - Gorgeous rosette for your OM! What color ablone is that? And - can you tell me the width of your rosette - thanks!

Dave Anderson - Wow, a great combination of a segmented rosette and abalone ring in the middle. What's the with of your rosette?

Lars Stahl - THIS rosette is very close to something I was considering doing. I really like the double abalone inlay - Is this the new ZipFlex material? Width of the rosette please?

D Mills - I LOVE this rosette - tell me more. What is the wood? What is the color of the abalone ring? Between yours and Lars - these are close to what I'm thinking.

Hey Paul.

The shell is .063 green abolone from LMI.

The wood is a block of Amboyna burl I bought on eBay. `Cut a smaller 2"w x 1.5"h x 1.75"d block from a selected area of the larger piece. Trim 2 opposite sides of the 1.75" thick "loaf" to 18 degrees and cut into slices. Bookmatch the pieces and glue together to form a faceted circle. Thickness sand and then cut your rosette circle from the interior.

I crushed up the turquoise and the shell with a pair of pliers. I placed the turquoise in the channel left after removing a teflon strip, the larger pieces first. Then after applying CA I went back and sprinkled smaller pieces in the spaces. Then ran it through the drum sander.
