With great Mid-Atlantic (DE, NJ, PA, MD, VA, WV, and NC) OLF get-togethers at Sylvan Wells/Wells Guitars in 2007 and John & Brenda Hall/Blues Creek Guitars in 2008, I'd love to see us continue the practice of gathering together for show and tell, demos, hands-on practice, and buy/swap. I'll also mention here that you don't need to be an accomplished builder to bring a guitar or two along - first time builders or even the luthiery-curious can get a lot out of these get-togethers...Jody ended up getting a pretty complete critique on his first top bracing job, while John Hall was doing 1-on-1 intensives on bending sides most of the morning...

So...a few questions for you Mid-Atlantians...

1. Anyone volunteering to host this year's get-together? Before I'm asked, I'd love to host, but have a small shop (ask Chris)and a racing schedule which might not accomodate the best dates

My shop is the back of my basement - not much room although the spill over could hang out in front of the big TV.

2. What dates work best for you in late Apr/May?

Anything OK right now.

3. What did you enjoy the most in 2007 and 2008, and what would you like to see in 2009?

Meeting people in 2008 for the first time, and just seeing what everyone was doing. I liked your sharpening demo. John cutting binding channels without looking. (Next time he has to do it behind his back!)

4. What tutorials or demos would you like to see?

I would still like to see someone do a neck reset. I would be glad to pass along the French Polishing technique that Robbie is teaching online right now - probably takes an hour to do the demo.

5. Would you think that a $5 per attendee donation to cover the food and drink provided by the host would be appropriate? I know we always have folks bringing stuff, but it seems like previous hosts Sylvan and John invested quite a bit of time and money into making the get-togethers special, and some reimbursement would be welcome.

Most certainly!

Finally - thanks again to our previous hosts, Sylvan Wells and John & Brenda Hall...if we have any issue finding a host, it's because you folks are such a hard act to follow.

we are hoping to do this again but are hoping to do it a little later to allow the weather to be more condusive to some outside activity. If anyone out there wishes to host it would be fun. Not everyone has the room.
I will be watching this post.

Another thing to add on to Todd's list that would be good for beginners - how about a tutorial on top voicing - start with a braced top, tap it, pass it around, work on the braces, explain what you are trying to do, when to keep going, when to stop, what it sounds like in the end. People could bring their own braced tops.

It would take longer than 1/2 hour or so, but it could still be a good focussed activity for everyone.

I like the tutorials idea. We are thinking maybe a 2 day open house. There are so many good ideas and we would like to have some music this time.

I've got a very busy spring and early summer coming up, but I'll be keeping an eye on this and will try to make it if I can. All the ideas sound great.

I missed the last one, but would love to make this one. I really like the ideas presented - especially the French Polish. As a beginner, just about any subject would be relevant for me :-).

Thx!

Sounds great--count me in! I really like the idea of some collaborative voicing, and a pattern rosette demo would be awesome.

The later the better for me. Look forward to meeting you all.

Hey count me in ! I had a great time and learned bunches! it was nice meeting so many of the helpfull builders from this board.Todd critiqued my top,and showed us how to sharpen our chisels.Jim Warwick did a nice demonstration of french polishing, its not realy that easy is it Jim ? my only regret is missing Johns neck fitting seminar. I would like to see anything on voicing, neck removal/refit,dovetail fitting , more on French polishing would help. Jody

Count me in - I missed the last one, but I will move heaven and earth to be there this time.

A bracing/HHG and voicing tutorial would be great. [:Y:]

Depending a bit on the timing, I'm also very interested in attending. My wife and I are in the midst of a move right now, but will be landed in Charlotte with a truck full of house on Sunday! I was hoping to be able to make it last year.

Chris-

Carpools are good. As things get closer, maybe we can caravan/carpool our way to PA.

No problem Todd.

As I told Todd, my urge to host would be wishful thinking, unless 1/2 the attendants were willing to hang from the rafters. No room.

Please, please, please let this be by the weekend of June 6 at the latest, because my family and I leave for Turkey the next weekend (vacation plus business trip for me.)

Is there really a trout stream out John's front door?

I would be a longshot, but depending on the timing and if there is a Carolina Carpool, it would be fun to be there.

actualy I would like to see methods in the repair modes, bridge removal ( without heat if anyone knows that technique),fret board removal, neck steam off ( I think i already said this in another post), binding and plate removal. basicly techniques for taking the guitars apart with little or no damage ! one thing I would like to see in the new construction mode is a bridge glue on .. Hi! I can't speak to the get together, but once you're settled give me a shout and let me introduce you to some of the guys in/around Charlotte. There's a decent amount of us here. Best of luck with the move.
