The classifieds section is great !! really nice to be able to sell wood and other musical items amongst friends and all ! BUT, I see a lot of wood for sale at prices higher then from stores like RC, Allied, colonial etc etc. Their prices are set with thought on rent, storage etc. you guys dont have that. I am just speaking for me, but again, why would a person buy wood allready bought, for more that it cost in the first place "from our sponsors" ??.

As long as the seller is not a "commercial vendor" they can participate.
What they set there price at is there own prerogative.
If it done sell, o'well, they can lower there prices or not sell it.

OK, just kidding Lars.

Yes there are some that are selling there wood at a bit of a premium vs the tonewood suppliers. One reason might be because it has something "just a bit more special" than the average tonewood supplier has (not Bob though, he's the bomb!).

Everyone prices there wares where they think the market is going. Sort of like real estate. Some times people don't look to far while other's will spend hours on end looking for the "deal" in their mind. Sometimes, sellers will have to real in their prices a bit if they really want to sell the items. Sometimes there's a bit of fishing going on, and finally sometimes there's the "grass is greener in my backyard" syndrome.

I might be old fashion, But the reason for my thinking this was was that this forum is not a "Store" for the public as I see it, and when I sell things to my "friends or buddies I tend to give em a friend price, not a real estate price so to speak. but then again some in here might be bankers or lawyers and we all know how they think !!

Oh Lars, you have some things to learn.

When selling to friends, you need to charge double, just for the privilege

And when selling to family....Well.... triple or even 4x's isn't out of the question

I only signed up for the ads section to put support $ into the system. I've got nothing to sell and nothing yet to buy. But who knows, I don't look very often, but I thought $12 was a small price to pay to support this site...So shoot me. (quickly ducks behind a concrete wall...)

I have wood for sale in the classifieds, so I'll address your question, Lars. After I shoot you first. Just kidding. It's a fair question.

First off, in my threads where I'm selling B&S sets, I explain my pricing:

"All of the prices are what I believe to be current market value. I don't want to undercut OLF sponsors or other wood vendors, and I don't need to take a loss on any of these very nice sets. On the other hand, if you see similar sets elsewhere for lower prices, I will consider adjusting my prices."

I searched around on the web before setting my prices. I'll give you an example. Bob C currently has curly anigre on his site for $125 a set. If you look at the sets he currently has and look at the set I posted, I think you'll agree that mine is a higher grade set - much nicer figure (no offense intended, Bob!). So, if I priced mine the same as his or lower, I feel I'd be undercutting him as well as cheating myself out of a fair market price on what I have to sell.

Also, you said, "Their prices are set with thought on rent, storage etc. you guys dont have that." I'm not sure what you mean by saying us guys don't have that. I do indeed have overhead expenses associated with the wood. Rent, storage space, humidity control, handling time, time to photo and post, etc. Unlike the vendors, I can't figure those expenses into my prices or I'd have to price them too high, because I already paid retail prices for the wood at the outset. But, in fairness, and to have any hope of selling, I can only price my wood at the current market value. So, I actually am taking a loss, but that's the price I pay for tying up too much money in wood.

If you're looking for "bargain basement" prices, you won't find them in my listings. I'm not desperate for cash, so I have no reason to sell my wood at a price that would be more of a loss to me, which is what it would be if I offer a "special price for my friends". I consider Bob C a friend of mine, as well as other folks I buy wood from, but I wouldn't expect them to sell me wood at below market value or to take a loss on what they sell me, just because we're buds.

If you or anyone is interested in any of my B&S sets and you find a lower price on wood of comparable quality, from a reputable vendor, please let me know and I'll adjust my prices. Or offer me a trade... got a Woodmaster drum sander sitting unused in the corner of your shop??

Vendors bring your wares and price to your liking....
Consumers bring your money and spend it as you see fit...

If the price the Vendor offers doesn't agree with the price the Consumer wishes to spend....then we have the cross roads of Capitalism. The vendor has a choice to make. Sell at a lower price or hold. THE IMPORTANT part of which is the Vendor still HAS choice available to him. The exercise of this ability to choose will be driven by many factors already brought up here....overhead....uniqueness...etc.

AND.........the consumer still maintains access to the exercise of choice they originally had when they approached the Vendor. The consumer can most certainly 'shop' elsewhere.

I'm not done but I wanted to say quickly to Lars...I'm not telling you to shop elsewhere. I've read nearly all your posts and I like you. This is just me rambling about economics.

So this brings up an economic principal referred to as Scarcity and Competition. Todd Rose is referring to this exact thing. Thomas Sowell wrote that..."Scarcity means that everyone's desires cannot be satisfied completely, regardless of which particular economic system or economic policy we choose. Therefore competition among people for these resources is inherent. It is not a question of whether we dislike or like competition.." It exists on it's own in any system of buying and selling.

Not to hijack Lars's thread here but I think this speaks nearly directly to the tap root of what's eating at him. He WANTS this stuff but won't part with his money because he has the right to EXERCISE something that is still available to him.....CHOICE.

Not to mention the fact that he has really bad case of WAS and TAS....and dude...I'm with ya there.

Sometimes you feel like a deal, and sometimes you don't! I have gotten a few good deals, and even on the ones where I didn't, they seemed to be reasonable prices for the goods offered.

I have made one purchase, and I think the most important thing to me was that I hoped that the seller and I were both happy with the deal after it was completed.

As has been said, this is a friendly community, and I would hope that after any transaction someone would be happy to do business with me again. In my case, I did not buy the cheapest set of wood I could find, but it was what I was looking for. There are good deals to be found, you just need to know what you are looking for and what you are willing to spend.
