Hopefully, these old fridges had the gas removed before being disposed.

Good Point Alain,

Mine all had the gas removed by the refrideragtion shop prior to entering into my hands. All of the landfills around here require that the gas be removed before they will take the units so I am hoping that it is the same elsewhere.

Terry is right about the oil and the run use. You can dump most of the oil out and properly dispose of it but you can also leave it in and just leave the exhaust line (which used to be the pressure line) long and tape a foam filter over it so no oil vapour enters your work space. Neither is difficult to do. I have my compressor mounted on the wal and away from my bench. Again, once under vacuum these things are nolonger under load so they run quiet and for ever!

Shane

some municipalities have a toxic junk recycle day (ours is 2x's yearly) They may be a good place to look. Our trash collector allows a large item pickup weekly (movers get a LOT o stuff in the street, and they still pick it up) So, a lot of stuff can be salvaged in your own neighborhood. You mileage will surely vary. But good greif don't pay for this stuff. If you're gonnna spend the money, get on ebay and get a good used vac pump with some fittings and gage already on it. Otherwise handy men will have no trouble with the MacGuyver factor

It's compresser oil. The guy who I got it from said that if it isn't there the compresser will burn up. I got mine for $25 and thought that worth driving to a dump where ever that is around here and looking for one when the shop I bought it from was 1/2 mile from here. He said he usually has some on hand .
Some info I found here.

One of the sites I saw suggested trapping the oil from the exhaust and pouring it back into the suction line, once a month or so.
