tony iommi has three fingertip prosthetics.
and you could always turn it over and play left handed.

hope you get well soon.

I just listened to your rendition of Recuerdos again. Yours is not a voice that will be silenced by the loss of three fingers.

Tough News Colin,
My thoughts are with you!
I wish you a speedy, painless recovery.
I’ve been looking for salamander jeans for you but I don’t think they would fit.
Besides, I’ve heard there are some bad side affects like a craving for mealy worms and damp, shaded arias.
But seriously, we have not given up on you Colin. You are still here and I’m confident you will find a creative way to move forward.
You are, as always, an inspiration in so many ways!

All the Best to you!

Wade

My thoughts exactly Pat, a beautiful piece performed with the passion of a musicians heart and nothing shall ever take that away.

Cheers

Colin,
I'm very sorry to hear about your accident. You have the right attitude though! Keep on moving forward.

10 yrs. ago I broke by back in a car accident, that like you're experience - came out of the blue and changed life from one day to the next. I can tell you that there's nothing more valuable than a positive attitude and the love of your family and friends. You'll surprise yourself at what you'll be able to do.

Here's wishing you a speedy recovery - I'll be sending positive vibes in you're direction -

john

Colin,

I am new to this forum, however in my 52 years of life, I have enjoyed playing music and building things of wood. I have no words to express how I feel. I am most impressed with your attitude. Perhaps you can turn the guitar around and play once again. Perhaps not.

But when one door closes, often another opens.

I know for sure I am not alone on this forum appreciating my fingers, toes, legs, arms, eyes and ears. I for one know I need to spend a bit more time playing, thank you for making that abundantly clear.

I wish the best for you and for a speedy recovery.

Cheers, Joe

Colin,

I'm just back after nearly two weeks in the internet wilderness courtesy of America Off Line. We have spoken on the phone but I want to say something here on the OLF forum. I think it's a profound irony that such a thing happened just crossing the road and can't begin to think how I'd react if it happened to me. I am incredibly impressed and proud of your response and reaction to this and you have taught me two more things - firstly to always look at the glass half full and react in a positive way and secondly to treasure and enjoy to the full every minute of my building and playing as I can never know when it will suddenly stop.

I'm looking forward to seeing the first results of you "new direction" and have the recordings you sent me to remember that part of your fabulous skill. You've taught me lots in my building and there's lots more that you will continue to teach me still. Onwards and upwards !!

Colin:

I just had to post and echo all that was said here, before me. My situation a few years ago was with a wood lathe. The tool I was using caught in the wood, bounced the tool and my hand off and between the tool rest. The left ring finger and pinkie were damaged, but after a great hand surgeon and six months of therapy it is about 80%. The end is numb, the dexterity suffers, and I don't play as often.

Unlike you I was depressed until the first day of physical therapy, when I sat next to a guy 23 years of age who had both hands terribly damaged in a single prop airplane mishap. He, like you, was looking at things in such an inspiring way. At another therapy session I sat with another kid who had both hands damaged when a barge rope pulled him into the metal tie off.

There's a lesson there somewhere, but you've already got it, haven't you?

Keeping in touch with the injured girl may offer a positive outcome to such a negative event. Kinda of a Kharma rebound tactic if you will.

Good luck.

Thanks again everyone for you kind words and thoughts and for the encouragement that you have all given to me. I'm afraid the Django comparison is not really one that will work, I've always been a fingerstyler and that will no longer be possible to a standard that would be acceptable to me, so I have to acknowledge that that part of my life is over. However, when one door closes etc, so lap slide and hurdy gurdy it is, and a bodhrain also beckons.

I had a good chat with Dave and got a few things sorted in my mind for the future, it's just that my music and building will have to take a new direction, or at least a change of emphasis. It'll be a good few months before I can even think of going into the workshop as my middle finger in particular was quite messed up as well as losing the top joint so it's going to need a lot of therapy. But my brain is still working reasonably well so I'll continue to impart my luthiery pearls of wisdom here when I can.

Now what am I going to do with all that mahogany?

Colin

Judging your strength of character I'd say you'd build instruments with it after a long period of redjustments that'll be just as good as before but possibly achieved by a different route

Hi Colin,

My prior remarks were tainted by the absence of a filter between my brain and my keyboard. I was trying to let you know that I was astounded by your spirit, and by the resilient attitude that allowed you to be able to kinda joke about your situation. I have re-read my remarks several times, and regret that I did not simply tell you that I was astounded by your spirit, and by your resilient attitude - and stop there.

My sincere wish for a recovery beyond expectations, and a life filled with music and further lutherie accomplishments.

Dennis

Dennis, I though your reference to the Black Knight was hilarious, just what I needed, no need to feel bad about it at all. In fact I rather like the comparison to the Black Knight, I hope I can retain his indomitable stubborn spirit, yes good comparison. I like it!

Colin

Colin, as I said in my PM:

You sir, are a gem, and you will "cross that bridge" (build AND play) once again.

Thank you for your reply. You put my mind to rest.

Dennis
