Very sorry to hear this news Colin as I have heard some fine playing from you. I don't think I would be able to have quite as positive an attitude though. At least this early. I do wish you the best and hope you can find a way to make music performance a part of your life.
Take care, and all the best

I don't think I can say it any better than everyone before me but best of luck with your recovery. I'm sure with such a positive outlook you'll bounce back in no time.

Colin,

I am at a loss for words and can say nothing more than what has already been said. I pray for your swift recovery.

In an effort to be a friend and to help keep your music going, for ten years I've kept seven Coricidin bottles that were made on the same machinery as Duane Allman's. Say the word and one will be on the way to you.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help in any way.

John

Colin,

I truly don't know what to say, other than I can't begin to imagine being in your shoes, and am amazed at your ability to deal with what life throws at you. My heart is still about to pound out of my chest just from reading this.

Bad as it is, I'm glad the impacts were not any worse, and am inspired by how you seem to be handling the circumstances you've been placed in.

I hope for the best and quickest recovery possible.

Colin,

What an unfortunate event for you. But you seem to be putting it in the best light and that is truly inspiring.

Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Colin,

I'm very sorry to hear about your accident! I've always enjoyed your insights and experiences associated with your guitar building and especially, not surprisingly, the recordings you've sent me of your playing and your instruments.

You're a rarity as a guitar maker - with your balance of skill, understanding, elegance, perfectionism, adventurousness and as keen as an ear you have as and a perfect sense of aesthetics. I really admire that you've kept true to the spirit of the "amateur" (and I use this word solely in its strictest definition as a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons. ). Your wife is blessed with her violin and your teacher with the guitar you made him - as you are with the many you have for yourself and as we all are for your recordings, insights, pictures, help and ideas (and certainly friendship).

Surely it must be disheartening to think your playing days may be over - and to be unsure about your future building. But if I know one thing about you, it is that you're full of talent and full of love for music. You've given a lot to this community and to me personally, probably often without realizing it. But one of the greatest things about having the kind of talent you do, is that it is as mental as it is physical and I know for a fact you'll not be able to let any physical impairment keep your talents from manifesting in the real world, in one way or another.

You've positively affected your students, your family, your wife and your friends. You've helped preserve, restore, study and document important historic instruments. You've given others great advice when sorely needed. You've done important work in important times (after the tragic tsunami, for instance). Most importantly, you continue to do these things.

You have a million things to feel good about and I'm positive that you know that, or you wouldn't have shown so much resolve in what you wrote here.

Keep in frequent touch and please let me know if I can do anything helpful. I'm looking forward to all your future insights and contributions.

Joshua

Colin - My thoughts and prayers are with you. Joshua captured, I believe, all the feelings we have for you. I can only add that you will be in our prayers of thanksgiving tomorrow and the following months. We may not know why this happened to you. But, given your attitude and the support of a loving family and friends you will recover and find outlets for your creativity and love for music.

I'm sorry Colin. I have a feeling we will be hearing some jaw dropping slide playing before the end of next year. People like you can always turn chicken s--t into chicken soup. Hang in there.

I am sorry to hear of this accident, I hope your recovery is swift and the pain is not too intense. Being a player and builder I think about things like that happening while working around spinning sharp tools.

I agree with Shane, that Joshua said it so well.
Colin, my friend, you know what I think of you and your building/playing talents. You're my hero, man! That is such a terrible thing to happen to a man of your stature. You may be down for a while, but I don't believe you're out. I will certainly be thinking of you and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Colin, Words cannot express the shock I felt from reading your post, I also cannot put into words my admiration for your positive attitude. I pray that you will heal quickly and I also think that with your attitude, you will overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

Breaking the lurkdom silence..

Very sorry to read this! My two greatest fears are losing my hands, and/or my ears.

But like me, you seem an optimist, so, lets' put our heads together: take Django Reinhardt for example. He was terribly burned in a fire, and after a year in the hospital, his brother forced him to play -something- on guitar, and he did. What he ended up doing was creating a whole new sound, and approach, to the guitar. He only had two working fingers on his left hand, yet he, still today, defines jazz guitar, and his career didn't really take off until -after- the incident. Go listen to him; amazing.

Another to look to for inspiration is the banjo player for the great Bluegrass band, "Mountain Heart", Barry Abernathy. First, do some on-line searching for sound samples of the band: I'm sure you'll find plenty, especially on youboob. Then, take note of his left hand. No fingers, no thumb. Just a lump and nub. Then go back and listen intently to his playing. Amazing!

Your music in is your soul, Dude, not in your hands. You WILL find a way around this stumbling block, and you WILL come out ahead. As for your luthin', it's nothing a few new jigs won't help you overcome when you're ready to head back to the shop. My favorite cabinet maker friend cut half a finger off not long ago, and I asked him if he'd be okay. "Okay?" he said? "Not only can I still count to ten, I can now do fractions!!". He's my hero. You'll be our hero when you upload your next music sample, in your new style, when you're ready.

back to deep lurkdom:

Mario

Colin my heart aches for you. You will play again; you'll find away, you’re just that kind of person.

Take care to you and yours.

Colin, I'm so sorry. That is terrible news. It certainly sounds like you have a wonderful attitude, however, and I'm sure you will persevere. I wish you a very speedy recovery.

Really hard to say something after reading this. I can only hope you will be able to make music and instruments again, one way or the other.

Colin, very sorry to hear of these terrible events - and its inspirational that you have such a positive outlook going forward - Could I suggest something? Someone who has such a vast experience in playing and building could consider teaching both guitar and building - as there is something wonderful about getting the next generation both interested and skilled in the guitar.

Wishing you both all the very best for the future

Frank

Colin,
I'm at a loss for words to explain my feelings after reading your post and the numerous condolences thereafter. I believe that everything that happens, happens for a reason. Mario's post about Django and Barry Abernathy probably shows this philosophy best.

Would Django have become one of the greatest jazz guitarists to have lived, if he had not been badly injured? Would Barry Abernathy be as amazing a player? It's impossible to be able to answer these questions with a simple yes or no, but I like to think that these musicians would not have attained the same level of proficiency had it not been for their injuries, and our world would be quite different without them.

You have an awesome outlook on life and I'm sure that we will be hearing a lot more music from you after your recovery, and I've just promised myself not to complain about my arthritis or my steadily failing hearing anymore.

Cal

Colin,

I am in agreement with all who has posted before, and cannot add to what has been said already, except I want to add my prayers that your recovery is swift; and that in the future, this won't be an obstacle in finding creative fulfilment.
