There's alot of good old carbon steel for sale on Ebay. I've noticed that prices have gone up, but you still can get great chisels for less than half the price of new ones that aren't as good.

From my woodcarving book Chris Pye says that the bevel angle for the chisels is mostly determed by how high or low you want to hold the chisel for the most part. I keep wanting to spring for the double bevel chisel that Todd mentioned. I had it in my hand at Woodcraft but upon inspection I noticed the Tang was bent as the handle was off some and they haven't got a new one since.

OK, maybe I will splurge on a finger plane.

Absolutely!.... Bevel up for shaping the sides of the braces, bevel down for shaping the ends of the braces...

That's odd, I use it pretty much with the bevel down everywhere. Seems like I only use the flat towards the work when I flush cutting something or in squaring up mortice walls or something. How do you pull out of the side of the brace when it digs in?

I carve the braces with the top sitting in my lap  , I rotate it and flip it all over so switching chisel sides helps finding the right attack angle :)

So far I only managed to stab my knee, luckily it went on a tangent and just shaved some skin. One of those sturdy leather aprons should be good for this type of thing. My problem is that I build in a couple corners of my ....office, I dont have an actual bench, etc etc [headinwall] I have to use the knee-bench often.

Is that a plexi template ? I would imagine some 1/4" dowels in a mdf radius work dish would be OK. too. What do you think Todd?

I just go slow and "feel" the wood. if it starts to dig I stop and come at it from the other direction ( it helps if you split your braces also)... I do use the bevel down for scalloping also...
