I am building a stair for a client who owns a forest in Sri Lanka and had the lumber shipped here for his house. He thinks it is Teak, but I'm not so sure. If it is Teak, it is unlike other Teak I know. (Can you guess what I will do with the leftover material :D )

I'd like to know what it really is (very dense like Jatoba or Ipe) It's not Zircote

I have no Idea if Sri Lanka has any walnut species or not but it reminds me of a crotch cut of walnut but I would not expect the spidering. i don't think it is teak as the color and grain structure looks way wrong.

Holy cow, that's beautiful!
It's crying to be made into guitars, whatever it is.

Yes, he OWNS the forest. He had all of the stair parts processed in Sri Lanka by worker's making $1 a day. Thankfully they still need people to install them!

No one has a clue what this is???

Holy bat crap! He's going to let people WALK on that wood? That's gorgeous stuff. I don't know what it is either, but I'm with Steve... someone should make guitars out of it.

It reminds me of some of the eucalypts I've seen. Maybe some of our luthiers from OZ might chime in. It also looks something like the wild olive sets at Oregon tonewoods, olea capensis macrocarpus. Jeffry Yong might know since he's the closest luthier to Sri Lanka I know.

What does it tap like and are the pores close grained? Do you have any other boards?

It doesn't look like teak from where I sit. I've been around a lot of boats and seen miles of teak, and I've never seen any that looks even remotely like that! Teak typically has a very open, porous grain structure.

It's lovely, though. Have fun with it!

It is a very closed grain. The thinnest piece right now is 1", so I haven't started tapping on it yet, but from the looks of it, it will be an ideal tonewood (can't make a guitar with it until I get the stair done!)

I think I better build the stair first :D . I would have a hard time explaining why I don't have any material to build his stair!
