First off, thanks for the kind words:
Arnt, I hope to post much more!
Hesh, I'm sure JJ is swelling w/ pride over your comments!
Andrew, high praise re. bridge, coming from you!
Steve (aka JJ), YOU da man!
Bob, many thanks for the ad kudos. Hoped someone had seen it!

Alright, another clue.
This here is a shot of the bridge, and the plank it was taken from.
You can see the oxidation in the plank, and what the fresh-cut wood (bridge) looks like.
The red color threw me at first, but it's growing on me.
If I can wait for 6-12 months, the bridge should oxidize back to the blacker color.

Ok, here 'tis:

Thanks,
Steve

Last clue:

Among the scientific crowds, it goes by two different names:

Pithecellobium flexicaule
And
Pithecellobium ebano
Family Mimosaceae.

Jay oughta get this.... :D

Well, having had considerable experience with this in my youth, I can say without doubt that it is clearly a piece of (very hard) morning wood. I used to have some around, but I haven't seen it in years.

The national champion Texas ebony tree is in McAllen and is 40 feet tall, 133 inch circumference and a crown spread of 44 feet.

Set it in the sunlight and it'll speed up the photo degrade, but it won't oxidize unless you set it outside in the rain and weather....

DING, DING, DING!!
We have a winner. (Finally...)
Well done, Mike, and a tall tub of fresh lard will be shipping out to you soon. (Just send your mailing address, and credit card info for the shipper.)
Where can you buy some of that? TE, not lard, right?
Of all places, I find it at a small specialty lumber yard in Mount Enterprise. This particular board was about 7" wide, and over 5' long.
It was full of splits and cracks, so I got it for next to nothing. But as I was planning on small parts, I knew that the cracks could be worked around.

Steve, this Texas Ebony IS quite hard. It's as hard as anything here at the shop. Resawing for the headplate, smoke was pouring off the (pretty sharp) blade. I can't imagine resawing a piece of this large enough for a set!

Brad, may I quote you on my web site?
I like the sound of "Texas False Acacia Monkey Ear Ring Tree"!
What a selling point. They'll be lined up at the door just waiting to see it. They'll be outbidding one another for the opportunity to take it home. Why, a veritable deluge of cash is in my future. It'll be
great!

Larry, sunshine it is. Either that, or some rosewood dye from StewMac.

Thanks for participating guys.

Steve

Mike, too late it's coming.
And by Morning Wood, I'm sure you're referring to the rock band of same name, right? :o

A fine way to mark this milestone would be a name-this-wood contest.
As usual, a fine tub-o-lard is at stake.

If you are the kind to peek at file names, then this one will throw you. Good luck!
