I'm not sure if it's that the non-French-half of my heritage did it or the fumes, but it brings just a little tear to my eye . I think those ground surfaces are smoother than 200 grit, too!

I thought about doing an all superglue build just to see.
I'm sure someone out there already has.
What were the results?

A guy I know built a Les Paul completely with superglue in the early eighties, and he still plays it. So it's stuck together about as long as I have at least!

Hi,

I'm sure CA glue would be really strong to make a full guitar, but I don't think I'll try this someday.
And some steps of the building could be really hard to deal with, like soundboard or back gluing, don't you think?

Kevin Gallagher (RIP) built an entire guitar out of CA about 15 years ago. Still in use according to the same asked questions about 3 years ago.

There are different viscosities of CA which take longer to set up, this would help with larger glue ups like back and top to rims.

I don't see why you couldn't use CA for a solidbody, but if you wanted to take it apart for a neck or fingerboard repair, cleanup before reassembly might be problematic.

Our student project guitars are almost entirely superglue bonded. The main exception is the back-to-siding joint, where we need a slow cure and use wood glue. If the joint is prepped and set properly it's stronger than spruce. It does lose strength in impact (though that's handy for rework). Here's our low-tech method for attaching siding to the top without a mold (gluing starts at 1:18):

I think the fact that it works despite the quick and crude clamping is a testament to the CA.

What kind of veneer is the long white strip you use for sides on the video?
It's strange!

The glue is not that strong. BUT that sticker that they put on the side is AMAZING

Over the last 20 years of building guitars I've been using more and more CA as I trust it. It really is nice to speed up some operations.

Now it all makes sense!

Yes, it is strange! It's 2 layers of Baltic Birch plywood, made by planing/sanding off 1 layer of 1/8" (3 ply) BB. Final thickness is about .070". Once down to 2 layers it's flexible enough to fit the profile. Lately, we soak it in water and let dry in a template to help it assume the curves before gluing... easier to assemble.

Is it because you want to show the whole building step, or do you sometimes bend "standard" sides on the iron in your course, too?

quentinjazz--the student project guitars are all done as in the video (I needed to simplify the process to fit in the classtime available... the single 60" side also helps).

theguitarwhisperer--yeah, I still need to make those, hopefully by Sept 1! Last Fall I taught the first third of the project with written and in-person instruction, then converted to video.
