I have looked all over on the internet for 1/4" top bearing flush cut router bit but can't seem to find one... I want to use it for a soundport jig.

Anybody know where I can get one?

Lee Valley sells this one.http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.a ... 46171&ap=1, but I would be worried about splintering. I think that you might be better to use a down spiral bit with a template collar.

Change your search term to "Pattern Router Bit" and you will find tons of them. Klingspor, Woodcraft, WW Supply all have them. Whiteside is from NC if that matters.

Thanks guys, But these seem to have the bearing on the bottom... I want the bearing on the top. I have made a template for the soundport that I want to use as a guide. The bottom bearing won't help...

...you know what I mean? Any thoughts?

I think he means the other "top", as in the end closest to the collet.

I don't think I've ever seen one, probably because you would have to reduce the shaft to get the bearing on then weld cutters on to the smaller shaft.

You might try using the shaft of a 1/4" bit as the bearing. If you pattern isn't too soft and you keep it waxed and keep the bit moving, that can work quite well.

I like to use a smaller bit with a collar for mine. Less chance of a blowout.

Use a 5/16 guide collar and a 1/4 inch downcut spiral instead .... your port will be slightly smaller (or you can always adjust the template size of the cutouts), but leaves some room to sand and bevel the edges.

http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.a ... 51208&ap=1 Using this type of template guide requires that you make your pattern smaller by the distance from the outside of the template guide to the outside edge of the router bit. I haven't seen a 1/4" pattern bit, but you can easily get a 1/2" size. You can get the template guides at any tool store or Home Depot. I would suggest getting a full set - they can accomodate a variety of router bits for many functions. I've got the Freud set, and have been happy with them.

I don't think these are available for "ordinary" routers; the shaft would have to be teeny-tiny where the bearing mounts. Not strong enough...
You'll note that the screw that holds the bearing on the end (in bottom bearing bits) is about 1/16"; but it's not supporting the cutters.

Kinda hard to find a 1/4" o.d. bearing to fit on a 1/4" bit shaft,
if ya know what I mean.
Smallest size I've found it 3/8".
