A year ago I registered the domain name http://www.hawleyguitars.com and set up a little web site with quickhost.com. Last week I received some messages saying that my first year was up but I was on automatic renewal and no action was required on my part. Apparently I was mistaken to interpret this to mean that I didn't have to do anything except not be surprised when I got a bill for the renewal. Yesterday I got a message saying my domain name had expired and now when I go to http://www.hawleyguitars.com I see not my site but a list of links to things in Hawley, Pennsylvania. While this is undoubtedly a nice place, I'd prefer to have my site back.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? Have I lost my domain name? The name was expired for about one day - are there people out there looking to grab names when they expire and, if so, why would anybody else want http://www.hawleyguitars.com? Quickhost doesn't have live support on the week end and part of me is hoping that this is some kind of default thing they do until I renew the name. When I do a "whois" search, my name still comes up as the owner. Is this a reasonable hope or am I fooling myself?

Thanks,
Pat

Pat: It seems to me that Shane at high mountain had something like this happen to him. Maybe a PM to him may get you some advice. Good luck.

Go to one of the domain registration site and reregister...you let the domain expire, but it's still probably out there and available.

I couldn't buy it!

It seems that each register has their own policy about how long to keep the name on hold.

Google a Whois service, and you'll see you're still the technical owner of the site, although it states it expired on the 12th of May 2010. Contact your ISP/registrar and find out what went wrong.

Pat,

Sounds to me that those links to Penn are just there from some sort of search engine but unrelated to your name.

Pat,

It may be that your host doesn't handle your domain registration. Mine are separate and I have to renew them both.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was able to get on on-line help with quickhost this morning. The reason that I was not renewed automatically was because they had an old credit card number which had expired. I sent in new credit card info and all should be well soon.

Pat
