I have a Tele type electric I am building with a 5 piece maple/walnut neck. I had originally planned on putting a headstock veneer on it so I took it down to 7/16" I am now really liking the look of the 5 piece neck on the headstock with the 6 inline tuners cutting across it, so I was wondering if that is too thin to just leave or if it would be ok. Its seems plenty strong.

On another note, the tuners I bought for it need at least 1/2" so if I leave it I can either double up the washers or grind down the threads or something, which is better?

thanks
John

Seems a bit thin to me. I'd put either a headplate or backplate on it. I personally would not go less than 1/2", but thats just me.

It has an 8 degree headstock angle on it so I am not worried about the break angle of the strings. It is not an exact Tele, it is my interpretation of a Tele.

I usually go 9/16" on the headstock thickness when building a tele.

Is it for yourself, or a customer? For yourself, might as well keep it, and glue it and add a plate if it breaks. For a customer, I'd probably give it a plate, or ask them which they'd prefer. And of course fix under warranty if it breaks.

Tuners, I would grind down the threaded inserts.

I've got a tele I did with a thin headstock, and it's been fine with the string tension. The problem lies with the tuners. I had to put extra washers under the nuts to get then tight so they won't rattle, and it looks really bad.....
