I want to put a wood rosette into my latest build something I haven't tried yet. How thick are your wood rosettes? Can you use wood veneer material? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Rosette and purf lines are usually .080" for me.

I like to go 0.060"+/- thick on my wood rosettes.

Thanks for the input I'll give it a try.

When doing wood rosettes , I use a separator at the edges. To get nice clean lines I make the rosette channel first. I then cut the wood for the rosette using the channel to set my cutter. Once I drop in the rosette I will use black or a colored purfling just to help frame the rosette. Some woods need it. This way I can set the rosette in without being to fussy with the final fit.
If I want to use just plain wood I make the rosette and use a scrap piece to make my cuts before hitting the top. I no matter how careful you are this is one job that takes some time. Set the cutter a bit shy of your rosette , that way you can nibble to your edges and get a tight clean fit. Nothing is more frustrating that hitting a coat of finish and seeing your finish sink into a void on the edge of your rosette. I also use a new bit for this job.

Make sure your top, and rosette material are both properly seasoned and stable before installing the rosette. If the rosette is too "wet" or "dry" it can shrink, or expand after installing, and cause all kinds of problems. For thickness I normally make the rosette around .080" or so. I install it at 1/2 the final thickness of the top, the scrape it level. IE, .100" top .050" rosette.
