you have to order the gotohs with the wood (or alternative) buttons .. or at least I do, mty guy usually has some in stock .. wouldnt think of trying to pull them off and replace, but I am sure others have with some tuner makes ...

I have a set of the Waverly's 3 on a plate, that are going on a Martin 0 size and the are beautiful, not a flaw that I can see. The $200 bucks is steep, but the quality warrants it IMO.

I bought the Goto three on a plate gold tuners with ivoroid buttons for my BRZ parlour project. They look really good & seem to work very nicely.
I can't find them listed with SM or LMI & I don't remember where I got them. The Classic tuners on the SM site look the same except for the shafts.

If you don't have a drilling jig, I suggest you get one. No room for error with the tuners on a plate. One good reason to use singles if you don't have the jig.

Filippo...I use the individual Gotohs unless a customer specifies Waverlies. The are excellent tuners and will probably last as long as Waverlies...at a whole lot less $$$.
I do not use the bushing that come with them. I drill the 1/4" diameter holes and the shafts rest in the blind hole in the center section of the headstock. DO get a jig! And drill holes before routing out the slots.
If you can't get what you want at LMI or SM, try Allparts. They handle a ton of Gotoh stuff.

It is easy to get the buttons off these. The claw hammer method is what I use, the same as in Chris's tutorial. The shaft inside of the button is different than the grover sta-tites. It is a little wider if I remember correctly. I make buttons that fit these but you could modify any of the aftermarket buttons fairly easily. Chris's method of drilling a round hole and gluing with CA works and you can also make a mechanical bond with an end mill in a drill press, which is a little trickier but more satisfying. I think the shaft is .08 wide by .150 long with slightly rounded ends on the Gotoh's. Here is a link to a photobucket page with photos of how I make the buttons. On page 2 there is a photo of Sta-tites, gotoh, and waverly open back machines with the buttons removed and the different shafts. There is also a photo of the sled I use to hold the button in the milling machine (or drill press with compound table) vise to mill the slot.

If it were me, and it wasn't for a customer who was happy to pay for Waverly's, I'd use the latest generation of Grover Sta-tites, and I'd probably have Burton make a nice set of wooden buttons for them. I like the Grovers a lot better than the Gotoh Sta-tite copies. I think the Gotoh 3-on-a-plates would look way out of place on a Martinesque guitar (though they are mechanically great tuners).

Another option is Santa Cruz tuners, which are the same as the Grovers, only a slightly different base plate shape (more like Waverly's). They are available direct from Santa Cruz, and they offer a discount for guitar makers. You can get them with nice wood buttons already on them.

Anybody know where Taylor gets their tuners for the GC7 & GC8? They're good looking slothead tuners but I can't find them anywhere?

I've built 3 slotheads. Like Hank, I used the open Gotoh's on 2 of them, but the client requested Waverlys on the other. I'm re topping a small Parlor with the 3 on a plate Gotoh's and then seem to work fine. I haven't changed the buttons on any of them. If I need any with special buttons I'm going to beg Burton to let me send him the tuners, and have him make, and change the buttons

Here's one I made. Inspired by Chris' video I pulled the metal buttons off the Grover sta-tites and put on some ebony knobs from Stewmac. I was a little concerned that the superglue only joint would be weak, but it seems to be holding up fine so far.
