I have a new nitrod guitar with a small problem. I had someone do some finish touchups, unfortunately, there is now buffing compound in a clear distinct white line buried in the neck to body joint. I want to remove the compound without harming the finish.

Any ideas?

Maybe a little warm soapy water and a small brush?

Hmm. Th bloody elusive in Canada naphtha.

I think' have a squirt of ronsonol somewhere...

lighter fluid is naphtha. Any white gas is darn close too.

A damp cloth and a sharpened toothpick should be enough to do it.

Just so you know, Naptha is available in Canada. Mowhawk finish products sells it by the gallon and it is availible through Richelieu. Richelieu only sells to businesses, but if you don't want to go through the trouble of setting up an account then every cabinet maker and most general contractors probably have one. I get mine through a contractor friend in town. This is also how I get my Nitro.

I set up a cash/credit card business account with Richelieu last week, with no problem. If you want an account to carry a credit balance, you have to jump through the usual hoops. Price is $46.21/gal.

Stick-type compounds employ a wax-like base to bind the bar together and allow application to a spinning buff. Naphtha is the correct solvent for that binder as suggested by several gentlemen here, and will not harm lacquer. When a thin line of compound is packed into an open seam or undercut corner, some mechanical assistance may be required, just as Mr. Arnold points out above. We use thin, flexible wooden coffee stirrers reshaped to a smooth, sharp chisel point to gently remove dead buffing compound from around the bridge, pick-guard, and other nooks and crannies.
