I don't remember where I learned this from but thought I'd post it for others who might find this step a bit of challenge.

When adding side purfling under your binding, it can be a challenge to remember to stop the cutter at the points you want to miter (tail wedge, cutaway tip) & then do another setup on your binding cutter just for the binding depth minus the purfling line.

So what I do is I add a "ramp" the same thickness as the side purfling for the binding cutter to ride on, right in the area where I need the difference in height.

Edit, this guitar is being rebuilt with new binding and purfling... hence you'll see the previous maple binding which is being routed off.





When I'm done my cut, I just have a small bit to chisel off then make my mitre.

Ok Rod .. I sort of get it .. I fully understand adding a ramp .. I do something similar, but simply tape a piece of the required purf in place, then route the end off of a tail wedge in order to leave enough protruding to mitre into ... but

I don't get at all why you have something bound, then route that off and leave the ramped area ???

And I would love to see that same cutaway point after you routed, and then again after it was bound .. what did it look like ?? It seems to me from the picture that you added the cutaway point, and some bw purf under it, after the back and top of the guitar went on .. and you would have removed the very point of the back wood at the cutaway .. did you somehow replace that to make the purf lines mitre at the tip on the back ??

I should have said something about this guitar. This is the second guitar I ever built and it's getting an overhaul. New top and total binding change (maple original to EIR w/ m purfling).

So the tip of the florentine I added a solid piece of rosewood with veneer under it I'll post s new pick when it's done Tony.

Maybe that clarifies....

Ok Rod .. now I get it .. but wont you still have an issue at the point of the top and back, where you added the rw ??? ie, you had to remove some of the tip of the cutaway top and back to put the rw on ???

Depends on the top & back perfling scheme.



The back purfling will hide the tip wedge too.
