Love this discussion

We make guitars with various wood, techniques, glues, finishes and tools - seems like all of these items are fair game for discussion. Robbie O'Brien just posted a video on fret removal where he shows a tool he altered - why not just buy one?

And John - this is still dry flakes, not mixed glue.

One of the reasons to use hide glue is repairability without having to clean the joint all the way - what about the 40-60-80 year old glue already on the guitar? Who knows what has been inside that body, but we still re-activate the old stuff with aplomb.

I friend of mine in the energy efficiency field has a 750 HP car because it makes him happy.

It's the principle of the thing, folks. A great find - free glue. Now we find out if it's good glue.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

make a test sample and see if it sticks.
usually they are 192 252 gram strength. see how it works.
not sure how old it can be but you will know once you make a batch.

Now I get it. You must gently soften the hide before you can make glue out of it. :D

Who knows, it might have some esoteric tone enhancing properties!
