This was a big surpirse for me earlier today, and i felt like sharing it. The mail brought me this fine gift from cold Romania.:a woodie (brw) plane with a Veritas PM-V11 blade, kindly, quietly and patiently made by my good friend Alexandru Marian. I don´t know how he got the time and patience for this in the middle of his busy guitar building schedule, but lucky me.
Clean and dirty shots for your amusement (and some show off on my part) are offered. BRW shavings kindly provided by ACME (tm) fine wood shavings, inc.

Thanks Alex, you made my day.

Beautiful looking plane, Miguel! I'm sure it gave Alex a lot of pleasure gifting it to you.
I'm doing a two day wooden plane class in April, and I can't wait, but anything I make will be pretty rustic looking compared to Alex's work.

Alex

That's a beauty!
Why not use some of our most beautiful woods to make our tools? Guitars will come and go, but our tools we will keep for a lifetime. I like the old planes, drills, braces, and etc. with the BRW handles. It was once commonly used as handle material for quality hand tools. I even have some putty knives with brass rivets and BRW handles.

What a beautiful gift, a real heritage tool.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
