I can't help you with the homemade table saw router insert, but since no one else is either I thought I would mention that I year ago I picked up a Kreg router table and love it. It is the bench top model that runs for $230 here in Canada. It is a nice solid router table that is a step or two above the cheaper tables you can pick up at the big box stores. I was originally looking at putting the router on an extension wing of my table saw but then decided against it. I think having a dedicated router table gives added flexibility that you don't get if you have it on your table saw. If you have the space for a dedicated router table you might want to give it some thought. If space is an issue than maybe putting it on your saw would be a good idea.

Space is for sure an issue, but I also don't know if I will use it that much. Presently, all I intend to use it for is to batch process bracing. Spend a day cutting brace stock and radiusing the bottoms and tapering the sides. Get a month or threes worth then tuck it away....

My set up is probably not worth a picture. I drilled an 1 1/2 hole through the wooden extension table of my tablesaw, screwed a router base to the underside, and when I use it , clamp a homemade fence in whatever configuration necessary for the job at hand.
Some years back I built a router table with an insert that lifted out so different routers could be used in the same table, but didn't find it useful enough to keep around. Sometimes less is more.

The extension is made from particle board with a HPL top. I use a few different auxiliary fences clamped to the saw fence for straight line routering.
There's a duplex plug on an extension cord to power the router and speed control.

I put this together this past summer from scrap I had. But I had a little extra cash so got the rockler lift and switch. It's handy for my purposes. I like the wood frame for screwing down jigs. That piece of wood in front is for doing binding on arch tops. Here its just out of the way.

I thought about not bothering with an insert at all, but the door to the saw cabinet hits the router. This makes it easy to get into the cabinet by pulling out the router.

Mine looks pretty much like Raymond's and Alex's. I don't have the lift plate but I wish I did. I did go for the rockler switch and base plate. They work well.
