I'm like most of you in that I take notes as I go and write down specs,
draw and scribble pictures, and just keep track of the build with any changes
in technique that I try. I keep a folder for each guitar and save the cutouts for any
future repairs that might come up too.

Bill Cory over on kitguitarsforum.com has a production journal that works well for amateurs. It contains prompts for various specs, plus room for notes, sketches, etc. I think it's around $10 bucks to download the file, then you can use it as many times as you want.

I'm completely the opposite. If I write something down, a little switch get thrown in my brain that says "I wrote this down. There's no reason to remember it." and I immediately forget it. If I don't write something down I'll remember almost all of the details. If I do write it down, I might not even remember what the topic was or that I even wrote anything down. When I read it back, it's like a stranger wrote it. Different people's brains work differently.

That being said, there's no way that anyone would remember dimensions and weights. Chladni patterns have to be drawn and saved. A shop notebook is a must if you want keep track on any detailed information about a build.

Check out this link. I don't use this so I can't recommend it. But it looks like the guy did a thoughtful job.

Mike--

Cool! That is the book that Moocatdog (George) mentioned above. Its pretty handy and has the wonderful combination of being organized but still open enough to use easily. Just print the pdf and fill in the blanks.

How many of you use that type of journal I'm really bad at filling in my notebook but this may be the answer!
