While squaring up my sides the other day I noticed I could easily make the sides (below the waist on the flat part) flex by pushing on them in the middle... is this normal? It's a LMI kit with pre-bent sides, I think they were about .095" thick. I also put bias tape strips in there with fish glue. Will they stiffen up once the porefiller,shellac, and tru-oil go on?

And no, it's not because I sanded the sides too thin.

No problem Jeremy my friend if your sides are around .095 some softness when one tries to press a thumb into a side with moderate or more pressure is not a problem. Mahogany can do this as can other woods too.

The real purpose of the side tapes is to arrest a side crack from traveling not to stiffen the sides.

Thanks. Having seen this I couldn't imagine not using any kind of side reinforcement. Spruce braces don't seem like a bad idea.

My all mahogany Larrivee OM has no side supports but there's no flex that I can see. I wouldn't be surprised if the Larrivee had really thick sides though.
