Geesh George! I'm glad to hear it missed the important parts. It's always always good to have reminders like this the more shocking the better! I'm scared straight now! Best to you on a speedy recovery.

Thanks again to you all. I want to give myself a chance at the best possible outcome, so I'll be seeking specialty care throughout the healing process. Not sure about my bruised ego, though. I can't stop thinking about how stupid it was of me to let this happen.

OMG! I had a run in with a router that chewed up my hand pretty bad, but I was amazed how well it healed. Hope yours also heals up well...

There should be no bruised ego. All of us have heard and ignored that little voice telling us something is not safe. Usually we get away with it, sometimes we don't. Good on you for fessing up and giving us all a stark visual reminder to be mindful.

Yikes!! I am glad it missed the tendons I cut a left hand thumb tendon coring an apple with a sharp pocket knife. It is not fun. I understand how these accidents happen, from a physics point of view the best place to support the piece while using a chisel is right inline with the cutting force. I spent about a week with Rick Davis and I still feel the best lesson I got from him was his persistence in calling out my non cutting hand location and physically moving it if necessary. He even called out my thumb while cutting pearl.

I've started clamping the work piece more often than I used to, when using a chisel. It is kind of a pain when repositioning it, but much less of a pain than what you are going through. It allows me to use both hands to guide the tool and hopefully stay behind the cutting edge.

A chisel that scares the heck out of me is the DeWalt side strike chisel. It looks like an accident waiting to happen.

You'd think with all the times we had that same breif thought... "maybe i shouldn't do this..." and then what we knew might happen, does, that we'd learn.

I am going to print that one out and hang it over my workbench. Maybe you could autograph it for me? A thumbprint will do...

Went to see the hand specialist today. He says I severed one of the two nerves in my thumb but managed to avoid any ligament or tendon damage. Great news! Might do surgery later to try and reattach the nerve, although I may elect to skip that altogether. We'll see. Was given some very gentle physical therapy exercises today and will start more concentrated work in that area once the stitches are out and the laceration is more fully healed.

Thanks again for the support. Hope none of you experience anything like this in the future. It's not fun.

follow your therapists advice as you are able...take every chance you can to push movement to the limits and keep on doing it! failure to do so will cause issues (possibly permanent) you won't like...

your injury looks fairly benign all things considered...at least in comparison to my fight with a table saw 3 years ago...in my case I will be lucky to ever regain full movement of my thumb as I removed from existence a saw blades thickness of extensor tendon and that amount is basically exactly the amount of tendon movement required to fully move my thumb...e.g. there is hope that the tendon will stretch out and compensate, but on the flip side lack of mobility over time might just result in my joint changing and not allowing said movement...hence my advice to push things to the limit as you are allowed.

as a note I have most movement back, just missing that extra little bit on the grip which really sucks when trying to move a heavy 1 3/4" door around.
