Larry, your experience humbles me the most,

i know next to nothing on finishing a guitar, mine was finished with... ...varnishOOOPS Sorry guys i don't wanna be banned from here please forgive me but i finished it before finding this site which is to my benefit right? Iwas also very impatient to string her up..ok?

Larry, you owe yourself a good deal of credit if you are an impatient person, man, you sure showed dedication for that first one!

Thanks for sharing!

Serge

Hi Larry, welcome aboard!
Great looking guitar. And, I think the Minwax poly looks fabulous.
Now--and appologies to those who have discussed this at length, but--what do you think of the Grovers? They look as good as Waverlys, and wonder how they compare to those?

Steve

Thanks for the feedback Steve. The Grovers are fine for that kit guitar and do a decent job of tuning BUT I have a set of Waverlys on my Martin 000-16SRGT and they were such a pleasant surprise as I had never used Waverly before - in a different league IMHO.

A 4 or 5 times different league? I spent $27 on the Grovers versus $140.00??? Man that's an easy call for me and my limited skills. It allows me to play with slothead designs and keep the cost of experimenting reasonable. If I was a pro builder or going to buy from a pro I would expect the Waverlys and be happy to pay more. They do feel that nice to me.

I really like the braces and the guitar. I hope my first one looks half as good. Years ago I raced off road radio controlled cars at a fairly high level. The engineers were out in force and my aluminum frame was drilled like you can’t believe. My car always right at minimum weight. The frame was drilled to lose weight and keep strength and it survived many races till I moved to a carbon fiber frame. I saw many drilled frames bend like a pretzel and I always considered myself lucky that a real engineer did mine. This is a long story to say that I really think this method or the I-beam method has merit. Strength and minimum weight together should be a Luthiers dream. May we need the engineers out there to take the next step? Left-brainers please step forward.
