- UV cure lamp

I found a 12" Dayton explosion proof fan on ebay. It's about 1300 cfm. I paid around $150 which is a lot less than a new one.

if you make your system so the fan is outside the booth, pushing are through the booth versus sucking air out of the booth you don't need explosion proof fan....... Save you some cash.

What is the best type of respirator for a polyester type of finish? Full face?

Presurized booths like you are talking about do a lousy job of evacuating stand off (fog) and are more apt to kick up dry dust from the booth floor and into you finish.

My fan is rated at 1800 CFM. This is correctly sized for a filterbank and booth opening of 4'X7'. Fan size is directly tied to booth opening at the point of application and at the paint arrestor panel. These are typically the same size but sometimes the filter array is smaller. You want as close to 10ft per second of airflow past the operator and the surface being sprayed. To little air movement and standoff becomes an issue, too fast and you will have coatings problems like solvent pops.

My room is 770 cubic feet with a window as my vent. I have two filter slots behind me to draw air in. From what I have read online, I would need a fan with a CFM rating that is 3x the cubic feet of my room- or 2310 CFM. Does that sound right?

Not having a proper explosion proof fan is a huge drag...Check your local craigslist.

Also, google "tube axial fan". If you're down for a project you might be able to make something.

That would work well Chris although not specifically "explosion proof". Add another $500 for that label but having aluminium blades is probably the most important part. That's the same volume I use. I shoot with my work about 4' from the fan shooting into it. I like to draw make up air from a fairly large opening. I normally leave the door to the booth open when spraying as well as the door to my shop. These fans REQUIRE a large volume of make up air. I heat my shop with a wood stove and have more than once forgotten to open an outside door. It will smoke out my shop drawing from my air tight stove. My booth is 10 x 16 and I wish I had put in a bathroom fan to run while work is drying and off gassing.

Is there a recommended minimum size/area for the filter array? My spray space is about 5'Dx9'Wx7'H and want to install a filter array on the 5' end. As with most folks space is limited.

...I've wondered about the upcharge for "explosion proof"...so is the motor in this this the same thing as an actual spray booth exhaust fan, except lacking some certification? This is an area I'd really hate to mess up on.

I've also wondered...if you're clearing a LOT of air, not really spraying that much product (ie, you're not spaying out a huge fan like some automotive guys do), and spraying said product via hvlp, are you still safe without an explosion proof fan since you'll never actually get a large concentration of fumes in your spray area? I should probably get an actual spray fan and stop considering flirting with death...or embrace bugs in my finish.

It's not about how much you spray....a spray gun will only put out so much material when you hold the trigger whether the object you are spraying is large or small. All those fumes when you pull the trigger get sucked into the fan and concentrated pretty quickly.....This is compounded in our case by finishing small objects where a significant portion of our atomized product goes right around the edges of the guitar and straight into the fan. Unlike a large object like a car where 80% of everything is landing on the panel and all you have is standoff and a bit of bounce back.....
