Looks like CF bars inserted into the neck and continuing into a neck block extension.
Perhaps to delay any need for a neck reset?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

In a Doolin type adjustable neck two CF bars are inserted like that but the reason they extend past the neck heel is to support the floating fretboard. I don't see any advantage for that if the fretboard does not float. And just FYI, the notes on the extension are not as clear with the CF-braced floating extension as they are when the extension is glued to the body. I know cause my daily player for the last 5 years has Doolin type adjustable neck.

Edit: Here's a photo of mine.
